I’ve never seen a movie that has all the constant ridiculous situations of a comedy but (almost) none of the actual humor of a comedy, honestly it was kind of impressive. I liked it but it wasn’t the best version of this script. If the plot was focused way more on ping pong and way less on trying to afford plane tickets I think I would’ve like it a lot more. The soundtrack and the performances were doing all the heavy lifting, the script needed work.
What do you think stops it from being a straight forward narrative? Is it cus it’s not “go to the tournament, go home, get money, train, go to the next tournament” but rather it dives into all the different sub plots and kinda seems like it gets lost at times?
Like some might think “what does this dog s*** gotta do with ping pong”?
Yeah it’s kinda like random event propels him toward something rather than a character getting from set piece to set piece. Like he falls out of a tub out of nowhere and that kicks off a whole plot that really has nothing to do with the tourney but it’s also how he gets his money for the tourney at the same time. It’s interesting… the threads that are weaved. It makes sense and it doesn’t

Not mad at this
I had a blast and the ending gave all of the insanity some humanity and catharsis. Wouldn't rank it ahead of Uncut Gems and I think the Safdies have had tighter scripts, but the execution here is pretty flawless from a production standpoint and none of the performances took me out of it. Just really high quality entertainment and it's pretty incredible how far Josh has come since Heaven Knows What from a budget standpoint.
Still can’t get over what that ball morphed from
Watched that s*** with my mom lmaooooo
(She loved the movie)
for me it’s:
OBAA
marty supreme
sinners
everything else
My Top 10:
1. One Battle After Another
2. Hamnet
3. Eddington
4. Sinners
5. Marty Supreme
6. 28 Years Later
7. Cloud
8. The Secret Agent
9. Ne Zha 2
10. Mickey 17

Oooooomf idk if I could put over sinners. Honestly the whole dog scene s*** kinda just puts it at number 3 for me after OBAA and sinners. Like I felt like in Marty Supreme there was several times we coulda did without a few scenes. However pacing was still fine to me

The humor is definitely here idk how you don’t find this movie funny
Bro this s*** was mad funny while trying not to be funny
I think most complaints will be “nobody was likable” and the casuals will say there’s no story despite there being a lot of story.

It’s about a man who wants to be the world champ, he loses his first tournament, goes home, has life hit him in the ass, needs to find money to go to the second tournament, finally does, and finally beats the guy who beat him.
Sounds like a story to me
Safdies and guys like Sean Baker try to hide plot points as much as possible so it’s not so cliche and in your face; but it’s there. The story is there.

I dont get the no story stuff at all lol. Then they’ll praise uncut gems or good time when it’s similar in structure.
how did you enjoy watching them chase a dog for an hour? Meanwhile they’ll then say good time was way better when 1/3rd of that was tracking down a bottle of acid.

I feel you, but at the same time the hotel clerk told him do not use the shower cus it’s messed up and Marty didn’t listen. So obviously there is the randomness of the guy and dog getting crushed and it being timed that way (even tho he said ima wash the dog rn), but it stems from Marty’s character being stubborn and not listening

Yeah its all there. really it’s just a movie about a hustler finding the way. I gotta walk back what I said a little.
