Certainly a crowd pleaser but its a bit of a retread for safdie imo. Good movie but more of the same
Once we get into the second act there was a moment I went, “Oh it’s Uncut Gems again.” Still a 4.5/5 for me though

Which moment?
Very impressed by this movie, safdie and bronstein have the sauce. On a straightforward textual level, the movie was very successful at bringing martys world and mindset to life. It was great to see Josh carry over the raw and lived-in atmosphere of good time and uncut gems into this film, it’s a breath of fresh air and served to remind me how much time has passed in between uncut gems release and now.
What I found most interesting though is how this movie operates at a meta level, with timothees performance and character being a reflection of the status he is attempting to cultivate as an actor. I will say it almost didn’t work for me but the spanking scene convinced me this s\*\*\* was genius and everything he’s been doing on the marketing campaign is fully intentional. Throughout the entire movie, each victory is met with an equal reaction of debasement/degradation. His greatest victories may seem meaningless in a wider context, but they are important to him on a personal level (referring to his exhibition match and birth of his child).
The film also seemed to be self aware on a directorial level; one scene that stood out to me was when marty and rachel get into a shouting match in his friends apartment, and his friends parents come out and join in. It follows the classic build up and explosive tension seen in previous safdie films, but defuses it in an entirely new way as the scene gets cut short when martys friend throws out the orange ping pong balls onto the nyc pavement. Really clever piece of directing there
I need to give this another rewatch to solidify my feelings but this is firmly in the same tier of filmmaking as good time and uncut gems. Good stuff
This also reminded me a lot of the color of money by Scorsese, especially in the hustling scenes with Tyler
Which moment?
For me it’s wen I noticed they both have similar girlfriends that hold them back in a way lol
WAIT PENN OF PENN AND TELLER WAS THE GUY WHO STOLE THE DOG???
Yeah that cooked me

Lmaooooooo nah why I think the exact same thing? Soon as I seen the b\*\*\*\* a schemer I said ohhhh she Julia fox?

Just because Marty does whatever it takes? I had a similar feeling, but it was a very positive thing
Literally any hate I’ve seen about the film comes across as someone mad that the film was heavily promoted across social media.
Troglodytes and Nazis on twitter don't matter though, or Sydney Sweeney wouldn't have had the worst year of any actress I've ever seen

Yeah it wasn’t a specific moment but at some point it clicked that I was watching a fast talking bullshitter that needed to get a lot of money in a short amount of time and was doing anything and everything to get it. I wasn’t mad at it though
Can already tell Tyler is going to get killed in this movie
He had my whole packed theater busting out laughing. particularly that bladder infection line. Better than The Weeknd

did someone reply to this and delete it or am i blocked by someone
this was fun but felt like uncut gems a bit! relatable character since he's younger though but godddd kinda wild to watch him flip on everyone and treat each person to the next over and over in search of trying to prove himself right and find this value/pride in himself that he's looking for. Really pretty movie visually and sonically.
lot of fun moments in this and was really nice to see with a full theater!!! kinda crazy thinking about the netflix acquisition that hypothetically, moments like this will be that much more diminished

im down to watch this again too, i really liked the pingpong ball scene. i felt bad for his friend a bit :/ and a lot of the characters in martys orbit
movie is hilarious but also kinda sad.

im really soooooo surprised that people are up in arms about timmy being really public and confident as a celebrity during this promo run. i feel like its kinda on them being online too much?
