From your standpoint, what should society do with serial killers?
Trying to save and rehabilitate people who do bad things is a very lost cause. It's an unfortunate truth that society MAY be better off without some people and some people do not need reclamation
The unfortunate thing about this though, is that the criminal justice system does not get it right nearly as often as they should
Apparently?

Mental health facilities, not the type Americans are used to but proper doctors and therapists. Not just confinement of a bunch of mentally ill people together with activities scattered in between (which is Jail, Prison, Rehab and Recovery Communities). Unfortunately, for those who have committed such acts incarceration is needed in order to protect public safety. I'm also not completely opposed to the death penalty if it were less racially biased.
According to multiple studies, there may be twice as many people suffering from mental illness who are in jails and prisons than there are in all psychiatric hospitals in the United States combined.
These are mentally ill people who need to be studied so that we can see what conditions makes someone like this.
I’m more of a supporter of early identification, intervention and treatment (if necessary) than I am of rehabilitation. Once you’re broken, you’re broken. And yeah there’s a lot of nuance to it.
In your example of the person facing a moral dilemma to feed their family, that person shouldn’t be jailed, instead we should see what we can do to make sure other families don’t go starving.
Once somebody performs heinous acts such as killing multiple people for fun, though, we have to accept that we failed them, remove them from society (whether incarceration or death) and start over with someone else.
