Premature but I know what you mean. IMO though, the "city" as a meaningful category in rap music is on its last legs. There are Atlanta rappers from LA, Detroit rappers from NY, Bay rappers from Alabama, etc. This used to be the exception but more and more its becoming the rule. Of course sounds have to originate somewhere. But with the ridiculous # of people in hip hop today and the internet, sounds leave their hometown before they've even had a chance to get established. There will never be another "great hip hop city" like NY, LA, ATL. (Of their scale and undisputed-ness. Don't quote me just naming some other city that has good music)

What if this is things coming full circle ?

Atlanta really took the Memphis sound that is no doubt “the trap sound” that defines hip hop currently, and has arguably the last 10-12 years.

    Three 6 Mafia
    Juice & Paul
    Pat as an MC

Don’t really get their credit for their contributions to hip hop, even from ATL.

Ya. I mean, older people give it credit I'm sure since that was the only place you could get that kind of music in the 90s. But its true. There is a strong bidirectional relationship btwn the 2 towns. Lots of people in Atl have cousins in Memphis

    Wow! I didn’t know that

So (historically) why does Atlanta get more shine?

Memphis isn't really as big of a metro area, it's much poorer, harsher life on average (not that Atlanta is all-around luxury but. Memphis just gets really bad) Greater Atlanta has 6 million people. That's part of the background. I'm sure a lot of talented people just got lost to circumstance

Also just the specifics of what happened in the late 90s/early 2000s with dungeon fam, Jermaine Dupri, crunk exploding from Atlanta (thanks to Memphis for starting it lol). This led to a particular context where there was a lot of money to be made, lot of black people in one place, and no barriers to them working together. Throw people like gucci, Jeezy in that mix and it formed magic over the years. Now it's basically hollywood

I think Memphis is catching up, and it just a matter of when now.

For one u started this based off a few artist that are signed to an Atlanta legend.

If u wanna say Memphis has a better new class than ATL rn that’s fine. (We will see who lasts)

I don’t think that qualifies as “catching up” Baby literally runs the rap game rn lol.

None of the Memphis artist even on Gunna level.

The forum you’re posting on is Damn near a playboi Carti cult nowadays.

Also can’t make a Memphis artist on 21 savage level.

So there is a lot here to unpack.

I’m not sure when you started following Baby, I’ve been a fan since day 1. Late 2015 to be exact and I remember his quick rise.

If you want to point to a Memphis artist who’s Genesis mirrors his, it’s clearly Pooh Shiesty. Here’s the difference though, Pooh’s debut mixtape and the momentum surrounding his emergence is light years ahead of where Baby started.

Assuming Pooh sustains this momentum I fully expect him to reach that level, and fast. You would think his critically acclaimed debut mixtape is a debut album.

As far as the multi dimensional hybrid artists (GUNNA) go, Memphis doesn’t have a 2021 Three 6 Mafia. There is no Memphis Gunna or Lil Keed but that’s ok. Nobody said they have to breed the same style artists, I just see the momentum building.

Do you want to talk production? Band Play and Tay Keith have curated a unique trap sound that blends all kinds of instrumentation (guitar, piano, flutes etc).

There is a Memphis hip hop renaissance brewing, and it’s only so long before it explodes

Go a few posts up **

I’m literally sitting in my studio packing boxes, and I had a random curated YouTube music playlist in the background

Some random song is on.. and I can stop nodding

I look over, and it’s “Traphouse” by Big Moochie Grape

And I’m like.. who? This s*** is insane lol

The future is definitely looking bright in Memphis. I’m not sure if any of them will get to Future, Thug, Lil Baby, Gunna, or 22 Savage level but only time will tell.

Of course there’s familiar names like Gotti, Dolph, Moneybagg, Blac Youngsta, Key Glock, Duke Deuce, Pooh Shiesty, NLE Choppa, Blocboy and etc....

But there are a lot of niggas bubbling too, who regularly get a million views. Like Kevo Muney, Dee Mula, BIG30, Big Boogie, Big Scarr, Action Pack, and some more in probably forgetting

you started off your post with a blatant lie just to make your argument have more credibility lol.

Lil Baby was in jail in 2015 and didn’t rap until
He got out late 2016 and he didn’t drop 1 song until 2017.

Once again u wanted to make a thread highlighting the surge in Memphis rn which is cool. U didn’t have to use Atlanta to do it.

Baby and Gunna are in their prime rn. They don’t have any artist to compete with them. Commercially or musically.

Before that Gotti,Dolph, can’t f*** wit Future Gucci Thug etc..

So u saying this off a little run they’re having now and using a whole lot of unproven artist. Atlanta artist are solidified.

Memphis is competing with Detroit and Florida for hottest atm maybe.

Atlanta sits at a different table.

Yeah bro, got my dates wrong.

    Definitely not trying to 🧢

I remembered perfect timing dropping in late 2016. I definitely stand corrected.

I actually still feel the exact same way, as I’m not saying Memphis has surpassed Atlanta but positioning to with a lot of talent from artists to producers.

Again, thanks for correcting the f*** out of me too. My sense of timing is all f***ed up lol

From the Duke Deuce album thread

    Hot take:

If Slime Language 2 is mid

And there no rolling loud festivals this summer (which looks highly likely)

Memphis has caught up to Atlanta and if Migos, Future, Thug, Baby, and Gunna don’t deliver showstopping great projects in 2022

Memphis will lap Atlanta and take the crown

Hurts upping these threads today but it needs to be done….

    So here I go KTT2
