Would’ve been cool if some of the scenes were shot in docu-style. Like, handheld camera grainy footage to capture what it was really like at the time.
I think this movie didnt talk about Michael enough. We get to know his personality, but not a lot about his story. I think this first movie should've focused on his early life until off the wall. For example i think his relationship with his father and his childhood didnt get nearly enough focus. My friend who went with me who had 0 knowledge about michael's life just assumed his dad was bad because of the movie repeating it, not because of anything that actually transpired between them, if that makes sense.
But jafaar did very good, and i still wonder how they nailed michael's voice so well, and of course the music video and concert recreations were very cool
You literally see him get beaten as a child
You literally see him get beaten as a child
I mean yeah, but a lot of kids went through that, and the abuses were much more than an ass whooping.
Again, a bigger focus on his childhood years would've cleared a lot of issues i have with the movie. The whiplash i got when they skipped to 1978/79 was crazy
I think a lot of things didnt need explaining for us cause we're fans, but the average person in 2026 has no idea how his life was, ESPECIALLY in his jackson 5 days, which were very formative for him and his decisions later on in his life

Showing the abuse in heavier detail limits the audience though
Id be all for it. People need to see but it's not really what this film is

I actually disagree with this.
I wish it was less of the Jackson 5 stuff.
The movie also had them singing Jackson 5 songs before they were discovered. I was like

makes sense why it feels rushed now bro was editing on the go
I didn’t love this, but when it hits, it HITS. That in particular happened during the performance scenes and basically from Thriller to the end. Jada at Jackson is damn incredible in this, and Coleman Domingo does some great work too. It’s competently shot and edited, and it looked good for the majority of the time. Something just felt off half the time.
I think this is a very surface level look at Michael with small pockets of depth spread throughout. I wanted more, and maybe trying to cram 25 years of one of the greatest performer’s life didn’t work out as well as I wanted it to. Reshoot controversy aside, I feel like there wasn’t a ton of room for certain things to breathe. I feel like I could watch a whole movie on the creation of Thriller alone. I do understand the story here is Michael trying to break from Joe’s control, and that is done decently. As a result of trying to do so much, there’s a lot of telling and not showing.
I feel like I’m being picky but I did have a really good time watching this, hell I may even see it again. At the same time, even ending in ‘88 I feel that they missed a lot.
3/5 overall.
Not bad, even good at times, evenly just solid. I think I might’ve preferred a multi season show honestly, and maybe that’s because I want to see everything.
yh jackson an american dream fits that better
This is still the wildest part to me. He looks SO much like him
If Jafaar doesn’t get nominated for something it would be criminal. Any bias aside, it was legit baffling to watch him on screen. I was shocked the minute he started talking. He just completely embodied Michael in a way I thought no one could ever do.
Imagine when the family saw the movie if for us was shocking just imagine
