the last paragraph (not the ones before) is basically how i view it ^
1. yes, he shouted that because of his specific type of tourette’s that makes his brain glitch into shouting the worst thing he can imagine. doesn’t mean he’s racist, just means he’s aware of racist words like everyone else
2. knowing this, it was not a good idea to have him at a very public, live-streamed award show where the mic can pick up on his tics. just because he has tourette’s doesn’t mean the people affected by his tics can just be like “all’s good!”
3. it’s insane that, even though this wasn’t live-streamed, BBC decided not to censor this, but they censored “free Palestine”
What’s the solution ? Besides put him in a live stream room . Only bring him on stage if they win an award ?
side note, why does nobody know how to spell Michael?? does the red squiggly line not pop up for you when you type the e first??
I think the best alternate situation I've seen is that the whole movie he was with could've had their own room. All of his friends and family, the cast and crew etc. They could've cut to them and done a segment about tourettes, and if any of them won they could've gone on stage like anyone else.
Like I was thinking that, but it does also feel very very exclusionary, I think it would definitely solve the issue here in a way that's definitely better than not being invited, but you're taking the guy who's campaigning that people with Tourettes should be able to live full lives like everyone else and saying 'You have to stay in this other room because of your disruptive condition', but at the same time, his condition IS disruptive, I just don't know man

Micheal
No red squiggly appears or autocorrect
u literally cant have his movies up for an award then not invite him whole point is to put tourrettes in the mainstream so everyone sees it thats like having a film about brad pitts life n not inviting him the tourrettes awareness in public places s the whole point of the film

on a serious note, what the actual f\*\*\*, who says that
Most politicians are more out of touch to the point it’s terrifying.
My homegirl from college had a friend that used to intern for Ilhan Omar and the things the friend would say about what those politicians (not omar specifically) talked about made you realize “wow, they legit do not have any idea how like real life works”
I've also heard this entire thing is really messing with people who have the same condition and making their offensive tics worse, like the whole discourse around it is really amping up the 'What if you said THAT' impulse in their heads, making it more likely that they'll do something like that in public, entire situation is a nightmare
This guy said ‘fuck the Queen’ when he met her
It is not discriminatory.
Now that’s real.

Man I swear of god if we start getting an army of white folks just yelling n bombs at black people I’ma stay inside

Him being in. The building but in a room with Tourette’s specialist and cast and crew wouldn’t have been the end of the world . Nothing from his pre show interview gave “ I need to be in the room I want to risk saying something offensive “ . BBC baftas just seemed too lazy to properly accommodate him . Probably didn’t even tell him he would be in the same exact audience conditions and after with no safe guards til he got there. Again his interview is pre show interview was good I will have to find it

have something like a baby room for him
most large auditoriums have them for people who know they’ll be bringing babies whose crying will disrupt the event, so they’re mostly insulated so that sound doesn’t get out easily, while still having screens to view what’s going on on stage, so people can still attend.
the organizers knew his tics would be an issue, and so did the guy. to make sure he’s in attendance while not disrupting the show, seat him in the baby room.
there’s no chance this was his first time shouting that word around black people, he had to be aware he probably would do it at this show. take precautionary measures. obviously, covering your mouth isn’t how tourette’s works. so external accommodations are needed.

I thought that too but the rebuttal that I couldn’t disagree with is that yes it’s hurtful, exclusionary and backwards in terms of the type of advocacy the guy is ostensibly there to be a beacon of, it is probably less hurtful exclusionary and backwards than having black folks have to have the n word shouted at them in a room full of people and have to pretend it isn’t happening.
Having the movie there, having the actors nominated, having him at the show, giving the whole thing a platform would’ve been a big thing in and of itself, even if that whole cast/crew were in a different space. Especially if they did a segment on tourettes awareness.
And I’m almost certain non racist people with tourettes would totally understand the circumstance, and be happy with the platform to spread awareness and be part of the show in about as big a capacity as possible without being in the type of situation that happened with mbj and lindo
It's hard to even apologize to MBJ and Lindo in private because it would be amplified to the point he would say it again to their faces

The n word and other slurs are tics for for many but the population that has that level of Tourette’s is very low
you wouldn't bring a crying baby to an awards show, don't bring a n-word screaming tourettes advocate
It's hard to even apologize to MBJ and Lindo in private because it would be amplified to the point he would say it again to their faces
If people can’t understand why apologize in private not feed the mob trying dissect and hate on him that’s on them

Oh fair enough man, I'll have to see that interview, if he'd be all for it then I think that's absolutely the way to go about this

Hadn't considered this, Jesus

Wish he and the baftas would have taken that precaution . Craziest thing would unfortunately be if this is the first time he said it . Doubtful though . He should have taken better precautions knowing he may say it and how charged that word is as he knows the history. Say as he has used b word at airport and said other things . Like he couldn’t get in there in yell “ fire “ or “ there’s a shooter “
