Well I know this now someone already explained in better detail how this outburst would manifest, doesn’t change the fact that people were apparently being terrorized all night by this

Of course, not sure terrorised is the right word for it considering how crazy it would be for the person involuntarily saying these things & having no control. Hopefully, MBJ & Delroy were apologised to but provides opportunity for people to learn about this condition further.

BBC & BAFTA are the only ones to blame. Someone itt said they want to break the jaw of the disabled guy without conscious control for involuntarily saying it. What the hell are we doing?

    Sad state of affairs

u literally cant have his movies up for an award then not invite him whole point is to put tourrettes in the mainstream so everyone sees it thats like having a film about brad pitts life n not inviting him the tourrettes awareness in public places s the whole point of the film

No I get you man, you're very right, I don't think people with Tourettes should be excluded from public life, but I also don't think artists should be subject to dehumanising racial slurs at events celebrating the peak of their craft

Like I really don't know what the answer is here, I think some measures should have been put in place to make it less likely for this kind of thing to happen, but would those end up being dehumanising to the guy with Tourettes? It's not like he was guaranteed to say racial slurs, but he's WAY more likely than anyone else there to yell them out

    It's like a real-life ethics essay question

At this point yes I agree . Much of it does fall on bbc though for how handled when they knew he could say triggering things to many protected groups. They should have had a contingency plan like a safe room and something to help with tics . Sure there is a mouth self soothing device of some kind that helps with tics or strategies

This is facts & we had shows in places like Channel 4 which did provide insight into how people with this condition live & how it can affect their lives

i havent paid much attention to the discourse today but it genuinely seems to explain a lot of the difference in reaction

    Thank you.

Disability don't keep you away from this ability to get socked in the mouth buddy.

hey newsflash @MattM @Jonboi It's more ableist to put people on a pedestal/different standing because of their ailments (and that's a sentence that was told to me by someone with disabilities too)

the last paragraph (not the ones before) is basically how i view it ^

    1. yes, he shouted that because of his specific type of tourette’s that makes his brain glitch into shouting the worst thing he can imagine. doesn’t mean he’s racist, just means he’s aware of racist words like everyone else

    2. knowing this, it was not a good idea to have him at a very public, live-streamed award show where the mic can pick up on his tics. just because he has tourette’s doesn’t mean the people affected by his tics can just be like “all’s good!”

    3. it’s insane that, even though this wasn’t live-streamed, BBC decided not to censor this, but they censored “free Palestine”

The bbc is the one that owes an apology first and foremost for not cutting the moment

They all do. If his ticks are gonna be trigger by black people, maybe he shouldn’t be around them. Ridiculous that they should be expected to sit through that.

I will say that 'Why was that word even in his vocabulary? He's SCOTTISH' is the craziest argument ever and it's insane to see it so much, like do you think Scotland is a magical land that racism never reached or something

The word is in music tv movies including sinners . As much as I wish his Tourette’s was the fun kind of yelling “ where’s Sammy “ or pop culture references it’s not

I think the best alternate situation I've seen is that the whole movie he was with could've had their own room. All of his friends and family, the cast and crew etc. They could've cut to them and done a segment about tourettes, and if any of them won they could've gone on stage like anyone else.

im not excusing his behavior he shouldnt have been there and this is still his fault. You live with your illnesses and know what is a good situation to be in so he shouldve known better. But Dude i replied to is just uninformed about tourettes and spewing bull s***.
