Comparing this s*** to succession the blasphemy
Holy s***, talk about peaking early
Started so strong and then it just keeps getting worse and worse
The best thing it has going for it is a nack for engaging dialogue, but the characters and plot are tedious
So far, Midnight Mass is the only thing I’ve seen from this director that has really connected with me

I found Midnight Mass to be tedious with its unnecessarily over-written monologues and nonsensical plot.
I only truly enjoyed Haunting of Hill House from Flanagan.

I think the monologues are one of the only things keeping this new show interesting, but you’ll probably feel the opposite
I never finished Hill House, I just stopped giving a s*** about the characters
And it felt overly padded
It wasn’t bad tho

Midnight Mass was the first project I ever checked out from his guy and it was so overwritten and tedious. By the final episodes I genuinely thought he was f***ing with the audience because no way he seriously wrote that dogshit without intending it to be a joke. That Kumbaya ending + the monologue about cosmos and whatever the f***, I was like....somebody kill me. I actually really dug the first four episodes though

Fair enough
Can’t say I have that problem
I found a lot of beauty and meaning and character in the monologues from Midnight Mass
Loved the concept, and how they executed it
Have you watched anything else from him since then?
Everything before that show has the most godawful color grading, I’m glad that improved
Funny thing about all the mention of monologues in this thread is that I remember Red Letter Media had a whole bit in their review of it making fun of people referencing the “monologues” as criticism. Calling them impatient and stupid. I agree. Midnight Mass is hands down the best thing Flanagan has done.

I'm gonna watch Haunting of Hill House at some point because I have a feeling that I'm gonna enjoy it.
And don't get me wrong: I liked a lot of the ideas in Midnight Mass until I didn't. The small town setting with weird vibes and a mysterious preacher had a great Stephen King tone to it. I was there for all of that, then the ending shat the bed for me big time and soured all the goodwill I had for the stuff I enjoyed. I increasingly found the monologues more indulgent that immersive, unlike at the start/first half.

Monologues are not the issue, and neither is people's patience: it was the execution, at least for me.
I loved The Lighthouse and everything about it worked on a visceral level, but that movie could be considered a slow ass burn by some people. The only reason I'm comparing it to Midnight Mass is because it nailed through and through what Midnight Mass initially had then lost, and that is atmosphere. Once that was gone, some stuff about the demon/vampire wasn't adding up, and the singing stuff was laughable, but hey, that's just me. I'm in the minority
I haven’t started this yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Flanagan’s pedigree speaks for itself.
Midnight Mass is by far my favorite project of his.

I’m glad someone here acknowledges the masterpiece that is Midnight Mass.

I go back and forth on whether Hill House or Midnight Mass is better. Midnight Mass is a really phenomenal series, and probably the most overlooked and underrated horror series ever
On episode 3 so far and I’m digging it so far but based off the first 3 eps, my Flanagan ranking goes:
1. Haunting of Hill House
2. Midnight Mass
3. The fall of the house of usher
The others are either bland or ass

Midnight Mass was really such a great show. Obv nothing will touch hill house but there is just something special about Midnight Mass
I can’t stand this show
It has no sympathy for the characters, and in addition to being unlikeable, they’re also uninteresting
It’s not effective satire
It’s not effective horror
And it’s repetitive af
Each episode, you know what’s gonna happen, you know who it’s gonna happen to..
There’s no tension in that

Flanagan is really a mixed bag. I think Midnight Mass is the best thing he’s done while Hush and Doctor Sleep are pretty solid for they are. Everything else he’s done doesn’t work for me at all or just isn’t something I’m interested in.

I thought Gerald’s Game was decent
Yeah, MM was definitely the passion project, I’m afraid outside of that he’s mostly just not for me

I like Hill House a lot, but I personally felt the resolution left something to be desired. I can’t fully explain why, but Midnight Mass is endlessly fascinating to me. There’s so much to chew on, Linklater gives it his all in every scene. There is a lot to like.
