only band that could get away with playing the darkest most morbid music in the planet on a live stage while everyone in the audience is puking and dying, and then name it public castration is a good idea. good s*** @op

yeah, rape allegation, it’s been speculated that the girl isn’t very sane or an unreliable narrator because she said similar things about other members in the past

idk, gira does fit the bill to do something like that then again so i got no clue man, i think it’s best to separate art from artist across the board personally

Morality aside, I find it impossible to divorce art from the context that goes into creating it.

For example, if you take the most suburban white kid and he starts making Griselda clone rap, I wouldn’t be able to take it seriously and it would come off comedic more than anything. The context informs the art even when it’s not a moral dilemma imo

so what would you say about artists that you have zero context on? let’s say you don’t have any biographical information about that white kid who might make Griselda type rap, would you take it at face value then?

i don’t mean to say separate art from artist in the sense of neutering the personality and character per say that is instilled into the music, but moreover im not going to get up in arms about an artist being a horrible person, it doesn’t influence the way i view or consume their art in a sense

if i like it, it is what it is. the best i can do is to not support the artist monetarily and condemning what they did whenever it’s mentioned

do you think this applies mainly to lyrics or do you feel that way about instrumental music as well?

also i feel like this whole convo might be a little different (morality wise i guess) when talking about dead or living artists, like I might feel worse about financially supporting a Marilyn Manson type artist now but I don't really feel anything bad about listening to a historically important artist from decades ago like James Brown or something. and the whole other can of worms about judging morality from the past etc.

That’s my point on context. Yeah I might like the music at first but it would get entirely warped by the context. You can’t exactly unknow information so it’s not like I have a choice.

Even artists that have such a little media presence create an air of mystique about them that enthralls their fan base even more leading that to being a part of the context.

And that’s not even considering the positive sides of having context. Drain Gang fans love the music but they also enjoy the fandom that comes along with the aesthetic/personality (whether a persona or not) of the artists so the context is informing the art in a way that makes the music even more enjoyable.

I think the way the vast majority of people consume art is so heavily tied to context that it feels very pick & choosy when it comes to the whole separate the art & artist convo

I think it definitely can apply to instrumental music as well.

I avoided the entire moral aspect of it bc that’s where it gets very opinionated from person to person but yeah an artist being dead kinda is the ultimate cancellation in a sense so it’s definitely different from morally shaky living artists

@op listened to white lights and i absolutely loved the album holy s*** is it depressing i felt like they went lighter with the sound of the instruments and it contrasted perfectly with the guys voice and with the girl also coming in as well too.

Blind is absolute favourite song holy s*** i had to keep checking at the lyrics to make sure i’m hearing what he’s actually saying cause i was just astonished by how tense and the amount of self hatred in the song

Funny enough i was having a great ass time playing with my dog and drawing my backyard while listening to suicidal ideation on audio form

It’s especially hard to divorce the art from the artist when dude has songs with titles like “Raping a Slave”.

gira sure isn't shy when it comes to his lyrics. listen to his solo stuff, listen to the great annihilator -- basically his own admission to rampant alcoholism where he pretty much admits nothing waits for him on the other side for the stuff that he put his closed ones through

bro had a tough childhood/teen years too, getting arrested on the regular and all that

great thread for one of my favorite bands ever

top 3 favorite albums would be The Great Annihilator, The Seer, and White Light with Love of Life together. I have enormous respect for To Be Kind, Soundtracks, Filth, and The Glowing Man (one of their most underrated records for sure)

Volcano is one of the most disturbing songs EVER recorded

@op if you haven't listened do yourself a favor and listen to Gira's solo record Drainland (name aged like fine wine lmao). great stuff, and some of his Angels of Light stuff is good too but ive not revisited it in forever

ive been through a bit of angels of light stuff (how i loved you, akron and everything is good here) and also drainland it's amazing how his angels of light stuff is remarkably great too, it damn near seems like he can't do any wrong

also, pretty unique top 3. people's favorite records are usually like SFTB, TBK and Filth

Volcano is definitely my favorite song off of SFTB by leaps and bounds, it's so ridiculously catchy.

i think you would like their current latest album, leaving meaning. it's a lot more straightforward

give this a shot if you'd like
