The thing with tropes such as the white saviour trope or the noble savage trope is that they for the most part aren't purposefully degrading and can often have the optics of being an "admiration" of other cultures. It's more a consequence of white-centric writing, than a deliberate effort.

The Last Samurai is a good example. It glorifies the samurai culture as noble whilst simultaneously portraying it as archaic and connecting the two. And in the end all the glory gets concentrated onto the Tom Cruise character, leaving the people the events actually impact mostly in the background.

Surprised by the amount of ppl that defend. Yes I understand Cruise wasn’t the “last samurai” doesn’t mean it wasn’t a white savior movie.

Not saying the movie is bad except that plot line where the girl falls in love with Cruise who killed her husband and the kids accept him as their new daddy
