because over the decades what used to be an artform itself that emcees actually took seriously (performance) has been reduced to young niggas with abnormally horrible stamina (seriously it's scary how bad of breath control some of these new niggas have live.) walking/running around on stage just "rhyming over the words!" jadakiss voice
and also, you can have both. One of the best rap shows I've ever seen was Common and he had live musicians and a dj playing the beat too
I'd say that's more on the labels signing these dudes off the strength of 2 or 3 hot songs and then rushing them on stage for shows without any sort of development. Just milk them for as much money as they can for those hot songs then throw them to the curb the moment the hype starts to fade.
Hell yeah this looks fun. The type of concert where I would shoot dope before it before lighting my wacky tobbacky.
unfortunately most rap concerts are nothing like this

Yes but this thread isn't about both. I prefer live music as well but to dismiss not having live music is stupid. Hip hop was never that and if you think performers today aren't doing justice to the DJ / emcee format then watch different artist.
Jadakiss at the garden this year is probably the number one performance in music this year and it was just a DJ and emcees.
Same, OP. I think rap concerts shouldn't be considered as music even that much, rather an event for youth to blow their steam off and socialize (in some sort of way)

Jadakiss’s performance was something else truly. What a moment.
Why do musicians need to be present? Hip hip was always a DJ (who was featured) and a an emcee (who controlled the crowd)
How does that make no sense?
It's bc white

Im peeping. This just a thread for cacs to get their rocks off
A lot of them are just reliant on crowd energy and atmosphere
I’ve seen a good number of rappers live but only at festivals. There aren’t many rappers I’d be interested in seeing live
Doesn’t have much to do with musicians either. It’s just about performance
Most rappers aren’t performers. They jump around yelling bars sporadically with poor breath control.
It’s a difficult genre to perform and there’s only a few that take the time to become great at it

I respect this take. Nuanced. We never fully realize that hip hop really is the only genre where you gotta say a BUNCH of words with sometimes barely any space (Or you gotta create spaces live where you can breathe and the DJ can back you up or it won't sound awkward) in between. Unlike R&B and other genres where you don't have to talk in damn near run on sentences. Yeah, that s*** is very tough. Which is why you gotta give niggas like Freddie Gibbs, Denzel Curry, and Busta Rhymes they flowers.
@CliCity I agree Jadakiss/LOX probably did have the best live performance this year. But him and those niggas been doing their craft for decades and came up in a time where you HAD to know how to live perform (hell, some of their big hits that night were live freestyles they did at radio stations)
how common is that type of come up nowadays?
S***, I saw Kool Keith perform at Prospect Park a few weeks ago. And bruh that s*** was just so boring. It didn't help I was like....one of the only niggas in the. (white ass) crowd that actually knew a lot of his stuff lmfao
