Got that Rivette book too
Going to read it once I get more films down. I’ve been putting off Céline et Julie vont en bateau for almost a month now telling myself ”tonight” every day and watch something else instead

Damn you gotta stop sleepin on one of the GOATs
I've seen just over a dozen of his films so far, but oddly he's one of the few in my fave directors who I don't own a book about, so I'm very hyped to read this one
Celine and Julie is also one of the few major Rivette films I still haven't seen either. I've been sleeping on that one forever too

Got 4 down rn, with two of them being Out 1 and L'amour Fou.
Now that I'm off uni this semester I have plenty of time to clear my watch list
I'll def watch Céline et Julie this week then I'll probably peep one of his later films!

This is the original (and first release from 2007) Gaumont set. Region free as well! I think this might be the second iteration, because I think the first Gaumont set came with a booklet and was bigger as well.
Some of the pictures of this set are s***ty computer renditions and not actual photos
I know Olive Films has the rights for U.S. and Curzon/BFI did a release for UK/EU (that one has the best subs apparently). Can barely find links for this except for copies on eBay, french Amazon and some other French retailers
plus it has the prettiest cover
edit: just noticed that it's a 2014 re-release of the first 2007 gaumont set, so I hope the subs are updated on this

Damn im looking for a copy to replace my Olive release of it, cause the 3rd disc on mine skips Might have to peep that one
I wish the Japanese version from a while back would get re-released over here. That release has a feature where you can pause the film at any time and "click" on images and onscreen text, and it will give you more info about the film/event that's being referenced (like interactive annotations). But the only language option is the French voice track with hardcoded Japanese subs

that interactive s*** sounds cool asf. not sure if this has anything like that. it's gonna be a lil while before i watch this too but i'm really excited
do you any supplementary litterature or articles for histoires? i'd like to know more about the films they're gonna bring up and the wiki page only has a handful
regret copping Coming Home now that ive seen it, but tbh wouldve been perpetually if i didnt have the complete 70s ashby run

Nah I don't know any supplements along those lines. But I wouldn't say it's necessary either — you're going to miss a lot of references, among other things, regardless. I think it's most enjoyable when you're content with that idea, and just let the images and the ideas he expresses with them wash over you.
It's less of a "history of cinema" and more of a "20th century history seen through cinema", if that makes sense. The most pertinent things are the images, the various ways he intersects them, and what he's narrating while they're onscreen. He contextualizes every reference to fit into his own narrative threads (a lot like Rappaport's films The Silver Screen, From the Journals of Jean Seberg, and Rock Hudson's Home Movies — if you've seen any of those).
There's plenty of moments where the actual film or media reference isn't really relevant, just the image/ideas expressed. Try not to get caught up on references you don't know about or any ideas you don't understand — there's hundreds (thousands?) of images from archival footage used, so wanting to read up on them beforehand is a fools game imo.
There's really nothing that can "prepare" you anyway, because of the way he uses the images. Like if you know the name of a film that he uses an image from, that won't come i handy much when he's taking that image and cutting it with a totally different one in order to illustrate a metaphor for a historical event or philosophical argument.
Hope that makes sense fam, haha. I didn't mean to make it sound like the Japanese version with the annotations is awesome because they're necessary to enjoy/digest the project — I just think the feature on that version is a cool ideal in an addition to the film itself, partly because of how much work it must've been to compile all that info

he probably didnt have a crazy DP budget at first so i figured it was probably as good as it gets but maybe not
dramatically better than the version i torrented last year
