Nah I don't know any supplements along those lines. But I wouldn't say it's necessary either — you're going to miss a lot of references, among other things, regardless. I think it's most enjoyable when you're content with that idea, and just let the images and the ideas he expresses with them wash over you.
It's less of a "history of cinema" and more of a "20th century history seen through cinema", if that makes sense. The most pertinent things are the images, the various ways he intersects them, and what he's narrating while they're onscreen. He contextualizes every reference to fit into his own narrative threads (a lot like Rappaport's films The Silver Screen, From the Journals of Jean Seberg, and Rock Hudson's Home Movies — if you've seen any of those).
There's plenty of moments where the actual film or media reference isn't really relevant, just the image/ideas expressed. Try not to get caught up on references you don't know about or any ideas you don't understand — there's hundreds (thousands?) of images from archival footage used, so wanting to read up on them beforehand is a fools game imo.
There's really nothing that can "prepare" you anyway, because of the way he uses the images. Like if you know the name of a film that he uses an image from, that won't come i handy much when he's taking that image and cutting it with a totally different one in order to illustrate a metaphor for a historical event or philosophical argument.
Hope that makes sense fam, haha. I didn't mean to make it sound like the Japanese version with the annotations is awesome because they're necessary to enjoy/digest the project — I just think the feature on that version is a cool ideal in an addition to the film itself, partly because of how much work it must've been to compile all that info
a rasie post with em dashes signifies truth bombs as usual
thanks for this

I've been addicted to the em dashes for so long now forreal
But just to give context about why finding that kind of supplement would require more digging than usual... The copyright laws don't (or at least didn't at he time) apply to archived videotape, which is what Godard used. If he had to go through the process to license all the images used in the project, then it would've never been made. (And if it wasn't made on video, then it would be a totally different film because the various way he edits images together in the project is a major part of the experience.)
Of course, this also means that Godard didn't have to cite anything used or list any referenced material in the credits. That's why it's so hard to find a complete list of films used in it, and it's why that Japanese release's annotation feature is such a novelty.
10 bucks + shipping for a brand spanking new copy

I've seen just over a dozen of his films so far, but oddly he's one of the few in my fave directors who I don't own a book about, so I'm very hyped to read this one
Celine and Julie is also one of the few major Rivette films I still haven't seen either. I've been sleeping on that one forever too
i predict celine and julie becomes an all timer for you

Never used that site's forums either (I rarely use that site in general now that I think about it). But I came across their app when I was searching for archiving apps that best suited my needs, and it def ended up delivering.
The only real negative I encountered is the couple dozen DVDs/blu-ray releases I own that weren't accounted for on their database — mostly older and obscure publisher DVD releases of certain films, but there were a couple newer blu-rays that I was surprised they didn't have available to catalog (e.g., the recent Hartley film boxsets). And the process for manually adding a release to their database in order to catalog it was wayyy too inconvenient for me to go through.
But there was literally like less than 30 releases in my physical collection that weren't available to catalog on there. Other than those, vrtually every single one in the "total" pictured above was added to it via the barcode scan. That part of the app works shockingly well, so i def recommend it
