Have fun! Make friends! Your roommates are usually your first friends you make.

Embrace the cringe of ice breaker activities and joining clubs and meeting new people and all that. Thrust yourself into as many social opportunities as possible

This news has ruined so many plans

Yeah you're gonna have to be Pablo Escobar levels of slick for the next year. Make sure to get Mason jars as they should be mostly if not entirely smell proof.

Get a safe and keep it hidden (I think I remember cops need a warrant for a safe, maybe not because it's on school property, but still), you can always argue that it's for important personal belongings.

You could probably hit a weed pen (carts) in there and be good, just make sure u blow out the window in case.

Wax will smell tho, doesn't matter how many dryer sheets you stuff into a tube

I was fortunate that I found friends in a diff building that I would chill with so it would be really hard to pin anything on me unless it was on my person. I never even smoked in my dorm, only in other people's (only if they offered)

  • Aug 13, 2022

if you're in your room leave your door open unless you're studying or doing something important. especially if you have a coed dorm

good to be inviting and you'll meet a lot of people that way. talk with your resident advisor and just understand what type of stuff is gonna get you in trouble and what type of stuff they're cool with

hey OP: congrats and I’m excited for you. Living in the dorms was one of the cooler experiences I had during college.
Biggest advice I can give: make friends with the people on your floor first. Just go say hey to your neighbors and familiarize yourself with them. Keep cool with your RA, they’ll bail you out of stuff if you respect them and they respect you. Make friends in other dorms and when you do inevitably go out, go out in groups and let people crash in your dorm if you guys have the space. If not, always make sure your friends get home safe. MIPS are no joke, and upperclassmen can be super grimey and take advantage of you. Learn how to cook basic meals, invite your friends to go half on ingredients sometimes and have communal dinners together. It’s really important to find community when you’re away from home. Set a specific day to do laundry my dude. It’ll be something you put off like crazy. Take your laptop down to wherever your laundry services are and study or do homework while you’re doing your laundry. Don’t leave that s*** unattended people WILL take your stuff or move it. Most of all have fun and if you hate it, know it’s only temporary haha.

Yup, if you use FAFSA, DO NOT get caught with d****, they will take it away.

That may go for any scholarship you have, be sure to read the conditions. I know for a fact FAFSA will get suspended tho

yeah this is tea they can take away your fafsa if you get in literally ANY legal trouble at all so tread lightly

Dorms are fun asl if its your first time being on your own. Gonna have lots of opportunities to make friends on your floor/building, the first couple weeks is primetime for friend making cuz everyone's trying to have a crew. Also the parties gonna be crazy depending on where you're at. There's gonna be tons of freshman activities happening in ur dorm and around campus, I suggest you go to them. At least the ones that seem fun.

Be careful for coppers camping outside your dorm trying to get you an MIP or possession charge (of you're not in a legal state). Careful for coppers in general, they love to hunt for MIPs on welcome week.

If you aren't a substance abuser, you don't really have to worry.

Living with ppl in one room isn't the most ideal, but as long as you establish spaces and rules and they arent douchebags, everything should be straight.

It's fun asl being on your own for the first time. Can come and go as you please, don't have to explain yourself, etc. Just make sure you don't make a habit of skipping class because that s*** is like a smoking addiction, the more you do it, the easier it gets. Unless you're slaying tf out of the class and it's literally a hinderance to a more important class, just go. You'd be surprised how prevalent pop quizzes or assignments are.

Oh yeah and always wear sandals in the shower. A wart on my foot literally just went away after having it for like 7 years, and I got it from barefooting the shower in my suite style bathroom. It didn't hurt or anything, s*** was just weird.

    Good advice

I remember once I went out to the smoke spot in the woods on campus and there were two cops posted. I had a bag with weed/a bong but they just told me to turn around and go back without arresting my dumb ass

One of the many times I got lucky with cops

Going to a hbcu. I’d imagine there’s little to no international students there

  • Aug 13, 2022

Honestly my advice is just play your role. Ur not gonna change overnight. If ur a nerd (like me) just focus on classes and ignore the parties/hoes. If it a social person then u should explore that side of you.

I think the biggest mistake people make is thinking they'll arrive at college and suddenly become ultra cool or some s***

It’s not for everyone it certainly was not for me but I do recommend making friends who are in Greek life if you do like to go to parties

being adjacent without being involved was the best way to go IMO

Yup, every campus got their wooded area smoke spot

I remember a few on campus used to be legit and lowkey, but people started building teepees n mfers would bring their whole squad rolling 10 deep to smoke n I started hearing that cops were rolling up on them regularly.

All this s*** just reminded me that was like the number one reason I joined a frat

As soon as I realized "Wait, I can have a designated safe house where I can party and get faded to my heart's desire and cops can't do s***?? Hell yeah!"
