yeah you’re right that there’s a lot of facets in music that has to snap into place perfectly to gain fans, but also that kinda leaves little room for error too provided you have the personnel for it lol

look at solange’s new s***, most of it is just pretty airy prod, with her repeating the same lines over and over and over and it sounds nice, but in terms of lyricism/substance there isn’t too much to glean from it at all, but that’s fine because the project as a whole sounds very nice to listen to and that’s all that really matters

writing is solely just words, you have to tie up your plots perfectly, write engaging characters, side characters, write out and invent a world (provided it’s not like non-fiction) use vocabulary properly, punctuation etc. songwriting in general is much more flexible when it comes to language in lieu of writing where it has to be put a certain way or you have the potential to lose meaning

but i agree with you on the sentiment that just because someone can write a fantastic book that doesn’t automatically translate into good songwriting, and just as for the vice versa too tbh. you have to be very great at either or to truly stand out and actually break out one way or another unless there’s some sort of external appeal (which music usually has, books not so much)

I think I may be wrong in saying that it takes more "skill" to master songwriting than literary prose

What I'm really trying to say is prose is inherently more natural to how people communicate and express emotions than songwriting

That might have to do with styles and it's hard to factor that in. Same way it's not fair to always point out writers being more descriptive than artists when artists dont always have to do that.

a book is literally predicated on it’s topic/story and that’s all it has to work with provided it’s not like a comic or some s***

music has production, aesthetic, the artist itself, marketing, the cover, visuals, voice, etc. that can all make up for poor doggybag songwriting

rocky is a great example of this actually, he’s not a particularly impressive songwriter at all, but his beat choice (at least pre-testing) is top notch and his flow is amazing, so that makes up for it

So basically the role of words in literature is split off into a bunch of different s*** in music
