and this right here is always the problem, and why art cannot possibly be objective as much as singular people’s opinions want it to be

  • Apr 1, 2020

the artist & listener are often focused on and desire different things. that's the source of irritation you feel each time you hear something unfamiliar. there are qualities that bypass individual focuses and desires & genres and classifications, qualities that act as a bridge from heart to heart, but to even discuss the mechanics of that requires a belief in something outside yourself. if i am not the sum of all things, who is? what power? what happens when that power switches? when a better argument is made? there's either self-sourced progress or a belief in divine authority.

All art is objective but there's layers in each argument.

You could say the White Album is the greatest album ever made or Kind of Blue and there's legitimate arguments for both.

You can say that Bad or Take Care are the greatest album ever made and you'd be wrong. And I f***ing love Take Care.

Music is a science. Why else do you need to study music theory to make good music

technical skill doesn’t correlate directly to quality. it is something that ALLOWS you to make quality. It doesn’t simply end up in you reaching some sort of quality. There are still the subjective sides to artistic expression that prevent a surgical and sterile outlook to music

OP says music is objective but can't name one objective, measurable quality of 'good' music that inherently separates it from 'bad' music

This is true as well. This is part of what I meant in my earlier post about layers to the conversation.

This applies to my favorite art form, movies. You can make the most technically sound film ever, but if there's no soul to it, or ingenuity in the camera work and great performances, it was a waste. It's much easier to make something look beautiful than it is to make it feel beautiful.

No, it's because music is objectively subjective.

What aspect of a piece of music makes it good? If it was objective, you should be able to explain something specific and measurable.

Can I ask when and why subjectivity and objectively became a thing?
