notbrockYeah but I feel like old samplers added some texture to it because sonically the beats on illmatic are different than modern hit boy beats lol
I love the album and hit boys production but sometimes I feel like his boom bap stuff really lacks the crispness
He beat all of the beat allegations with this project. The ones before this I feel you, most of his beats lack something. but you reaching when you gotta talk about kbps of the samples lol these beats are great

They both used the exact same sample and made a drumless loop with the same part. But Al’s version just sounds so much cleaner and more crispy. He also samples in stereo while Madlib still only samples in mono for some reason

I’m not sure if this fits your diagnosis but it’s interesting Duality has two beats that are drumless sample flips that alchemist has also chopped (although with this one, alchemist did it years before flying lotus did)

And madlib still the goat. It’s not everything especially since hit boy be adding some heavy and crisp drum sounds and bass and stuff so the sample is just one element with Nas taking the main space. I thought the sample on Japanese soul bar sounded very full actually

Al has some very bad examples of this though
The sample for Daddy Kane is actually crazy, but the Alc beat is completely mono. Same with the sample from What Happened To The World, the original sample is super wide and full
