it's still expensive as f*** for a normal young person
you are a trauma victim conditioned to believe that $1,500+ rent is ok
at this point it's more a lifestyle choice than anything. "upgrade" is subjective if you already have a nice place
he lived in the marina like 2 blocks from chrissy field with his ex for a few years too. that's about as nice as you'll get in SF but it's never enough ;)
oh i totally agree, that 3k was a legit quote from my buddy paying that in dogpatch for a literal living room/bedroom and hallway, probably 500 square feet
but hes telling us he truly hated living in sunnyvale and like, how do you tell him for that money he should be buying a house in hayward or something...its f***ed all the way around
no you should just work at a company with the best leadership and potential you can find
companies that are growing due to the industry they are in regardless of execution risk
you should try to get in at an actual startup that has received funding even during this pandemic environment. preferably their A or B rounds. that's a good barometer to judge if a company is growing
ibm is an evil company that outsourced all their work to indians and thought they could use a management approach to technology s curves in the 90s
now they just use financial engineering on their stock while pretending watson AI is changing the world through high profile marketing meme partnerships. they aqcui-hire for innovation. nothing happens there

https://breakoutlist.com/ doesnt look like they've updated for 2020-21
you have the wrong mindset. it's a boomer mentality
noone respects people who work at some legacy company anymore. it's considered settling, especially in the bay where risk taking is rewarded. job hoppers are normal. your initial few jobs should be you learning as much as possible, not searching for non-existent prestige. really noone gives a s*** where you worked before, if you are competent
google/facebook/amazon/netflix engineering jobs are cool if you want the stability, i understand and i don't hate on it. but don't settle for ebay or yahoo etc etc please it's going to f*** your momentum. and there's a reason why FAANG jobs are so hard to get now, the competition from autistic asians/russians/whatever is insane
you're much better off finding a cool hot new startup and getting some equity and riding it out, plus you'll actually learn things and experience a fun dynamic work environment
ok so prioritize working somewhere where i can dip my toes into different departments?
we had a career coach saying prioritize salary over equity when negotiating the first job's terms and...idk, ive never had an adult job and have no one in my immediate family to ask, like they were telling us about lasting a year to make it to the equity cliff and stuff (things ive never heard of)
i definitely have noticed smaller companies on linkedin mentioning their investors in the job listing...when do the scales tip between valuing those companies brand recognition vs guaranteed salary?
or is that just a subjective/common sense thing
