just burnout on talking or being asked every day about the same albums and same songs
it’s like pet sounds i don’t listen much to it like that i listen more to 70s material
Burnout on listening or talking about them?
tired of people sleeping on short fun bops
they are as essential and relevant than a million songs of strawberry fields and whatnot
ppl gotta stop thinking they too good for she loves you etc
the main early singles are still always super acclaimed but i think the first 2 albums would be held in much higher regard if it werent for the cover songs. not that i think theyre awful covers or anything, just..less good
out if "sounding like the beatles" is the definition of power pop
first of all the beatles had many different styles even on their first album
second their sound was one quarters; chuck berry, buddy holly, little richard and everly brothers
third there are 18 other great bands that the singles sound equally like if youre that broad with your definitions
edit this to one fifths cause they were girl group/motown stans too

i think theyre amazing and better than the originals in most cases
so i can answer your question of what defines power pop or so ill finally admit Singles sound like the Beatles? not sure what were even debating anymore but i stated my case and am gonna go play some games
the first since that was my question
never thought id see @Ithaka praising beatles
me too
too much beatles talk for the day ive had my dose for 2021 its a wrap meet y’all in 2022 for any further beatles conversations

hate to say this but gotta agree on postman at least
funny how for years i was told to PRAISE SGT PEPPERS or i wasn’t in or cool
and i would listen to it on and on
yet first time i heard please me postman that NO ONE HAS EVER MENTIONED TO ME OR ANYWHERE TO BE SEEN TALKED ABOUT ONLINE EVER i had the song on repeat for DAYS
the same effect for bbs where i was hammered forever on pet sounds and pet sounds alone and only and yet i had to find out for myself for a song like all this is that or what not (at top of my head just for example)
that’s why i like to talk more about this because it’s relevant, im not telling you anything new by saying pet sounds is amazing and you’re not either to me, and don’t we wanna hear something new? surely there’s more to greatness than this
same with weezer - etc etc
(sorry digressed there elric)

whew i was right i was listening the other day literally thinking "theres no way ithaka doesnt like this one"
random tangientally rated question since youre a big doo wop fan, who do you think is the #1 doo wop artist/group of all time? feel like i hear about specific doo wop songs more than the artists. other than stuff like the Platters. who has the goat doo wop catalog?

haha i appreciate the thought - i could play this boy right after in my room in a playlist
that’s a great question id have to sit and think of that when im off
@grimes @spongebob @Noir would you say those two bands sounds nothing alike?like there’s no influence heritage or belonging in the same playlist or likeness - recommendation whatsoever?
!https://youtu.be/UVKU6SevefY!https://youtu.be/sOR4-pFkPxgthe Singles intro sounds way more Byrds than Beatles tbh

was planning to dl some random doo wop this weekend (probably loose individual singles)

that’s most likely the best way to go - doowop was an era of singles remember albums or the concept of an album only started around mid beatles and even then in the us it wasn’t yet (look how late the bbs were to catch on) and since doowop is mainly US it didn’t really live on to catch on that
like i could cheat and rely with the duprees - they only got two singles lol they did do an album in 1968 i have to listen
great singles tho lol
but yeah that’s typical of the doowop scene

im a major sucker for Lennons voice so his versions are
Baby Its You
Twist & Shout
Mr Postman
Money
You Really Got A Hold On Me (ok tie with Smokie)
the Chuck Berry and Little Richard covers are pointless
hm to Ringos Chains and Carl Perkins covers tho
funny that you say that cuz the postman cover is one im not big on lol

great climax on This Boy
Paul said watching Lennon perform in those early days was like watching Elvis
he was a fanboy

All Ive Got To Do always been one of my favourite to sing along to with my fake Liverpewl accent (grandpa was from liverpool tho)

the only ones i really love are Twist and Shout and Anna (Go to Him)
but the only ones that id say are actually subpar or useless are the Chuck/Richard ones and Mr Moonlight. rest are middling to moderately enjoyable
ive been revisiting early Beatles this past week and I definitely have more of an appreciation from it now than i did when i first listened years ago. because of the knowledge/context i have of the rhythm and blues/early rock/etc. music that i didn't have before
for some reason im not huge on any version of You Really Got a Hold On Me tbh
