Two things
• having this perspective where everything has to cater to the wider “everyone” and someone should have their career first isn’t gonna do you any favors because no one’s doing that s*** anymore
• this is a 17 year old with a debut project.
If nobody is doing that anymore that's probably a good reason why there's no more new superstars in rap. We've been talking about the same 3 people for the last 10-15 years lol
If younger artists want to sell records at mass they need more appeal to a general audience.
If they do want to cater to a specific fanbase they need to have a crazy work ethic and build their brand. Someone like curren$y (as an example) can drop 4-5 times a year and still break a million streams on each record years and years after debuted . That's because the consistency is associated with his name.

Nobody is talking about the “same three people.” Once again, that’s only you and because of your outdated mindset.
There are a million artists out there who have been putting out a tape or two every year and sometimes over a hundred songs for their niche audience
it’s like I’m talking to a wall
we praising 9k now
soon we'll say ohhh respect he sold 2k
I don’t even like this kids music but let’s be real about where music sales are rn.
Billie Eillish had like 200 million streams and only managed to do 340k. If this was the old days that would’ve been like 600-700k.
Same goes for Nettspend. Sales are down all across the board because streaming has been fully adopted

this a great post i listen to music majority of my day not sure why sales thread or even a thing anymore who buys music? what would be the point of that
these dudes out here with cd players still too
honestly does it matter
I liked albums more than this that probably sold less

because “sales” includes streaming hope this helps
For the industry ppl. What is the gross income the artist gets from 9k album unit sales
if he's on a major label, a pocket of peanuts and a redbull
with a HBO doc
this why oldheads are making better music than the youth, smh
there’s a HBO Nettspend documentary?
now this is actually crazier
Not to be that annoying nerd poster but I think in today's day and age it's hard to determine just how popular or unpopular an artist - or anything for that matter - really is
I saw Nettspend at Dover Street Market in NY a few months back and it was fairly busy and not a single person went up to him or seemed to even notice him
Maybe they, like me, just weren't fans and maybe couldn't tell who he was because they'd hardly ever seen pics of him
But my point is a lot of artists might do crazy numbers in terms of impressions and interactions and memes generated on social media, but that doesn't always translate into sales (obvious I know)
The other side of that coin though is that there's artists you and I have never heard of currently doing crazy numbers in terms of real streams/tickets + merch sold, but the algorithm hasn't ever delivered their online presence to our feeds and FYPs for whatever reason
These things coupled with a seemingly infinite and ever expanding list of new artists popping up and getting some buzz everyday online, as well as everyone walking around with decades and decades of older (not current) artists and scenes and genres to explore, means everyone's attention is fragmented, so even pop (popular) music is not as popular as it once was
God damn nigga
