it's a complicated issue to me. i'm not a person who blindly thinks cops are devils but I also don't refrain from condemning them as a group. the issue to me seems to be how easy it is to become a cop, and the type of people the job attracts because of the elevated power level/dynamic as well as good pay and few qualifications. I have friends that work in the police force and they literally only work there because they failed at getting into any other job or getting through college. They've told me when going through the program they just straight up realized everyone else there was either an idiot or a straight up terrible person.
The demographic/geographics of the country (things like poor distinct lining) along with these factors really create a bad environment on both sides. I wonder how much of the tension around cops would be fixed simply by raising requirements significantly, like requiring 4 year degrees and more serious psyche testing upfront, and also allowing people from the community being policed to join said force. I dunno, I don't really have the answer to this one.

i don't disagree with stricter requirements especially regarding mental health when it comes to joining the police force. but as a person without a college degree who's stuck in a dead end job atm I could never get behind making more jobs require degrees. there are genuinely good people who become cops/join the military because it's their only option.

I dunno man, I'm talking theoretically. I agree with what you're saying too, which is what makes it hard. In honesty I'm against higher education almost holistically because of it being so artificial and bureaucratic. But in this case I just want it to be a detractor from a position with a elevated power dynamic being an "only option". Perhaps instead of a 4 year degree it could be something job-specific. I just think specifically that jobs which create power dynamics in populations need restrictions on them that are far higher than the average job, it shouldn't be the other way around like it is now imo. There should be other public sector jobs which don't include elevation of powers over the population which are easier job entry options instead of policing instead for sure.
