Feb 12, 2020·editedThe largely orchestral trap of 2000-2007 (Jeezy, TI) sounds nothing like the post-Drake/Rocky underwater "cloud" trap s***. Mustard had dudes stripping everything down even further, even if he isn't necessarily a pure trap producer. To pretend trap was ever a monolith so you can say we passed it up is ahistorical.

Depends though because Rodeo really was innovative at the time and Die Lit doesn't sound like the usual trap beats we are accustomed to.
It's the same with any genre though, not just trap or hip hop. Any artist which does something different within an oversaturated genre will surely be looked at differently. That's not to say its better but I understand why some would value those more so than others.
