Albums with trap beats but no trap lyrics maybe could use a genre name other than hip hop but I dunno. Post-trap could work

The largely orchestral trap of 2000-2007 (Jeezy, TI) sounds nothing like the post-Drake/Rocky underwater "cloud" trap s***. Mustard had dudes stripping everything down even further, even if he isn't necessarily a pure trap producer. To pretend trap was ever a monolith so you can say we passed it up is ahistorical.

This thread for instance ? White kids are always trying to explain how guys like carti And Travis are part of some avante punk ambient psychedelic trap high art movement and say things like “more artistic expression” and thinking these sounds are deserving of more merit or admiration or some s***. When in reality you’re just discrediting other great artists and styles and overvaluing you’re subjective idea of what makes something good art

Albums like Rodeo def have more artistic merit than a thug clone number 62737 album

Depends though because Rodeo really was innovative at the time and Die Lit doesn't sound like the usual trap beats we are accustomed to.

It's the same with any genre though, not just trap or hip hop. Any artist which does something different within an oversaturated genre will surely be looked at differently. That's not to say its better but I understand why some would value those more so than others.

But how do we validate our tastes in poor rappers hiding behind beat selection and song structure

Kinda is tho. A 1:1 generic thug copy doesn’t have the talent to make something on that level
