Jaar being a mad genius as per usual
otherpeople.bandcamp.com/album/weavings
Conceived by Nicolás Jaar, "Weavings" is a durational improvisation structured in the manner of a long fabric of sound. Artists include Aho Ssan, Ka Baird, Angel Bat Dawid, Ellen Fullman, Dirar Kalash, Księżyc, Laraaji, Jaar himself, Resina, Paweł Szamburski, Juliana Huxtable, Rolando Hernández Guzmán, and Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa.
Recorded in one sitting without a break on 30th November, for the Unsound 2020 online edition, with performers joining from around the world using Zoom and a high resolution audio plug-in. Jaar had less than 24 hours to mix the work into a whole, then streamed it live from his own computer as the first performance of the festival.
The "Weavings" album is that mix, unaltered since the broadcast except for subsequent mastering, and the splicing into tracks: a document of the lockdown period in which it was created, yet also timeless.
The drone-like qualities of 'Weavings' are not only a result of its durational form, but also the technology employed, with minute delays between what each musician hears from other performers and what they play in response.

excited to listen. Seeing them live next Sunday too
Goddamn that was vibey as f***. Highly recommended seeing them live if you get the chance.
Swear to God he really needs to stop switching up his name.
I could have easily seen him live recently completely oblivious of the fact Nicholas Jaar was under the name Darkside... oh well maybe next year I'll keep a closer eye out
yo @op @DwindlingSun @TRiLLA @Campari if anyone got a good Q for Nic / Other People lemme know quick 🤫

oh you're interviewing him?
ask what's his favourite city/venue to perform in and if there's any artists he still dreams to collab with in the future

Ah man, what do you ask a literal musical genius without sounding like an idiot. Some ideas, feel free to pick or disregard any. Also hopefully not too late.
When so many artists who began at a similar time to you/similar out-there sound, seem to have veered towards a mainstream/accessible sound more and more as their careers have developed (James Blake for example), you seem to remain focused on pushing the boundary of sound. Is that still very much your priority/what excites you?
If I recall you mentioned literally doing field recordings of small explosions of the earth for Cenizas - something along those lines? (for tracks like Rubble). What other wild sonic ideas do you have up your sleeve that you would like to execute?
Much of your work these past few years has been collaborative and/or in service of other artists - the expansion of Other People for instance. How much do you expect that to bleed into your solo work - the Nicolas Jaar moniker? Which to this point has remained very much solely you as far as I know.
How much does industry play into your mind these days? Your music is eclectic and possesses great depth to grapple with. You also put your music out for free on your website, do all those workshops with up and coming artists, etc. But you've also worked with Weeknd and FKA Twigs, so you are clearly still on people's radar. Is that something you think about? Maintaining some 'status'/visibility? Are there collaborative opportunities you have turned down? What do you look for in a collaborator?
You are Ancient Astronaut right? Who is the other member of that duo?
Why do you like to release music under so many different names?
What the hell happened to Soul Keita? Freedom is an all-timer track.
Your albums have very heavy conceptual/thematic focus. Sirens for instance. Is that typically the inception of your work on an album - formulating that theme? Or is it music first, then see what themes that conjures up?

In what way did you approach the cinematic score of Ema differently than you did a more ambient release under your own umbrella (ex. Telas). Is it more focused on texture, anticipation, feeling?
Are you content with your place in the industry? How does the world of music look back at Nicolas Jaar decades from now?
