Michael Jackson had black skin during Thriller so that alone hindered his popularity in Europe and Asia for a while. We're talking about the 80s here. Beatles never had that "disadvantage".

MJ only became more popular outside of the US than inside the US in the 90s, when his skin turned more white, it was impossible to ignore his skill and non-blacks outside the US became more comfortable with black artists. Japan, Germany and so on really went crazy after him.

MJ had a longer career and is probably better known these days, but Beatlemania was bigger worldwide than Thriller, even if Thriller is the biggest album of all time.

MJ as an individual is more known than any single Beatle. Influence-wise I would say they are the same. Beatles still sold more overall. I like MJ more

Because Beatles released like 8 albums in 4 years and MJ only 1

Because music distribution wasn't as advanced in the 60s

Becauses objectively the world was poorer in the 60s

Because America is the biggest music market and MJ at his height was more popular there than the Beatles were, but not globally

Because television and so on wasn't as widespread, nor did MTV exist

It's like trying to compare streaming era numbers with iTune era numbers with CD era numbers and so on. N'Sync sold like 40 million on a single album. Norah Jones did like 25 million...

The height of MJ fandom in Europe was actually HIStory, not Thriller. People here didn't believe the allegations like Americans did.

there’s just really no way you can say “not close” when they sold twice the amount of records as him as a group, not even accounting their solo work. I get It’s not solely based off sales, but with that taken into account, it is close. I agree with you that MJ is bigger, a fr larger than life figure and more recognizable than ANYBODY else in the world. but I feel it’s closer than all y’all are gibbing credit for
