Idk if anyone thinks artists HAVE to speak the truth but it should be way more celebrated than it is, cause it's just not an easy thing to do.
Exactly. Cause you get burned out and eventually reach a point where you feel like you're just talking to a wall.
Imagine how it feels to be giving warnings for years just to end up in the place that you warned niggas about for years but "oh you too preachy" like niggas wondering years later why Kendrick "chose me I'm sorry"

I meant yeah, he got to that exact point youre talking about about talking to a wall. Niggas dont really care about the truth if they arent being coddled & thats the sad thing
Front row, center, still gratitude, she love 'em
But she can't tell if it's genuine or just consumption
A***yze the gumption, monopolize the landscape
She's just another artist selling trauma to her fanbase
that whole verse was her coming to grips with this fact.
And also we talking about an artist that was outspoken about the fact she be performing to majority white crowds about black issues. We don't know how psychologically tolling that in itself can be on a black political artist.

Id argue that from what ive seen noname has way better politics than kendrick and is way less eager to play industry games to dillute her message
And this is just from what ive seen from interviews and SM

Exactly. So imma let her cook but
Sundial still one of my favorite albums of the decade but I can see how that type of content being draining
that's why I'm saying if this is like Telefone 2.0 but with Sundial type of energy/confidence she really might drop her magnum opus
Beauty Supply

Obviously.
We're basically just getting a Telefone 2.0 which I'm all for
dont see why emotional music is seen as "vibe music" lol.
then we need to call it for what it is, her walking this back to a degree, trying to reprieve herself of the pressure of being an outwardly political agent in an economic & social system that doesn't privledge it. In a country where we have a dearth of political representation on a meaningful level, people dhould look at artists to speak the truth. I dont think its weird to want depth from artists or want them to speak out on bullshit when it happens, not to protect their on interests as career artists when humanity should come first. she wants to make more vibe music, I will be there for it, & as long as she continues with the book club & doesn't completely lose all sense of criticality in her music, Beauty Supply is a good balance of both, I'm with it
I dont think its weird to want depth from artists about the world around them. It should be encouraged actually.
But my issue is when it starts to become a "where's Ja" moment where we start treating artists as if they're the ones in charge.
The problem with that noname tweet (even if u dont think it was a Kendrick and Cole sub) was that it targeted artists who music is about real issues, but her point of contention was that they weren't "willing to put a tweet up". Like thats just wild, noname in this interview comes to term that social media is toxic of because behavior such as that.
I dont think she tryna make vibe music either now, she just wants to want to take a step back from her usual content. But she still want to make emotionally grounded music
Obviously.

What are good starting points?

On the one hand i completely hear what you’re saying in regards to artists not being our leaders
On the other hand throughout history there have been many artists (especially outside of the west) who have helped bring about great political changes in countrys with political repression, corruption and compromised politicians.
So its not like there’s no precedent
Its okay to ask more of our entertaining class

Thank you
when artists have been the ones to be turned to to "speak the truth" that is highkey a hilariously bad sign about where we are as far as social awareness goes.
Yeah but that is where we are lol
Ofc its f***ing dire but that doesnt make it less true
Unfortunately more people take kendrick lamar seriously than any single truly left wing US politician
Nice write up and interview
Also thank God she admitted herself that she was sometimes going overboard online so her blind niggas can stop pretending she hasn't

name any musician that brought about great political changes in countries with political repression, corruption, and compromised politicians NOT named Fela Kuti or Thomas Sankara

J Cole lost
Noname cracked that nigga shield like COD warzone, s*** was crazy

maybe the single truly left wing politician can learn how to relate to the average human being the way kendrick lamar can
once academia learns to stop using big words to make they similes curve
my simpler s*** be more pivotal
then maybe, just maybe we can start talking about organizing and educating en masse. The left learned nothing from the black panthers (and it doesn't help, in the west at least, part of that is a product of y'know...the whole racism thing lmao)
