    theintercept.com/2020/04/09/nonvoters-are-not-privileged-they-are-largely-lower-income-non-white-and-dissatisfied-with-the-two-parties

“I’m so numb,” said Jahn Toney, 45, who had written in Mr. Sanders. He said no president in his lifetime had done anything to improve the lives of black people, including Mr. Obama, whom he voted for twice. “It’s like I should have known this would happen. We’re worse off than before.”

That rationale for nonvoting — “both of them were terrible. They never do anything for us anyway” — is typically cast by media personalities and Washington operatives as the province of rich, white, privileged leftists. But that claim is a lie. The data makes overwhelmingly clear that those who make that choice are often those with the least amount of privilege who believe, with good reason, that both parties and the political process generally are constructed to have no interest in improving their lives.

I’m black, I’m saying that black people were largely able to vote for whoever they wanted and they either chose not to vote or voted for Biden. It’s not because they “voted out of their own interests” or were tricked, it’s because they just liked biden more than anybody else running. It doesn’t make sense to blame it the candidates for not offering anything or voter suppression (in this particular primary case)

I’m also saying that nonvoters often don’t care about politics at all and wouldn’t have voted or participated in any revolution anyway, so no politician has an incentive to work for their interests. Participation in democracy is a prerequisite for your aims to be achieved, these nonvoters (mostly) aren’t voting for Biden, trump, Bernie, or even third party like the Green Party or something. Of course there isn’t a large force in this country looking out for them

oh i didn’t know you were speaking as if you were either party yourself or something and not just making a personal comment. i feel like there’s an obvious moral argument about
voting for those who don’t/can’t vote themselves and things that would benefit them regardless, even if at the end of the day a chunk of these people truly don’t care in any measurable way

why did black people vote for joe biden?
i've heard that it's due to his lasting relationships with key people in the south - not sure how much validity this statement has. what do you think?

It’s because hes Obama’s friend. That’s the overwhelming reason. Secondary is because they really just don’t care for Bernie’s message as much as we thought they would be. Third is because Bernie didn’t do enough to seek support of the black democratic establishment that largely controls who their communities vote for. I’m pretty sure that if Bernie was somehow Obama’s VP and had the same extreme message, he would have overwhelmingly won. In fact if Biden dropped out, Bernie prolly would have won the black vote by default if Bloomberg didn’t convince enough people that he was more electable

Biden took the lead and got everyone to drop out after South Carolina. I don’t remember the % but a lot of black voters said they made their decision on Jim Clyburn’s, a SC congressman, endorsement.

Who is actually arguing that the people sitting out the election because Bernie lost are rich white peoples?

This is a straw man if I have ever seen one.

If it makes us feel any worse, in many states young white people generally supported Bernie more than any other racial groups, even in states he actually lost

Just looking at this list, the fact Bernie beat Biden by a decent margin in California with Warren still on the ballot is really impressive.

Bernie really did have a shot man :(

It appears he only had a chance in a crowded field though. There’s an inverse relationship between the number of candidates and Joe Biden’s success rate, and if they had stayed in until after March then Bernie could’ve actually won with a plurality and forced the convention to pick him or something. To me, this doesn’t highlight the sneakiness of the dnc, but isnstead proves just how moderate the voter base actually is

I say it proves both. Dnc realized just how moderate their older base was and consolidated

You think the DNC just now realized that most of their base are moderate liberals...?

So you're basically saying black people would've voted for him if he was already a well known name.

Which is the issue to begin with.

People voted on name recognition, just like what was to be expected. That says more about individuals' lack of research than anything.

Do you really think that the reason black people voted for Biden is because they like his policy over Bernie's? lol
