So they took some the cast from mid90s and put them in another skateboarding movie
no mid90s took the Illegal Civ crew, this is an Illegal Civ film
honestly, I'm yt but I think it's very weird they're going for yt star + co-stars, again. We already have mid90s... and with that you can say it was Jonah's perspective too and better on him for going that route. But this already feels inauthentic tbh.
I mean Illegal Civ was always a Black (or predominantly Black) crew right? You know them because of OF, Na-kel is the star of the crew, Sage is a lowkey star in the skate community (and now blowing up as a rapper and starring in Calvin Klein ads).... And of course Mikey himself is Black. Feels like a huge compromise made in interest of money.
Na-kel should've been the protagonist.

!https://youtu.be/ES-wM70PSgElol yeah I think Meyers was right about no one possibly guessing that crush
hold up why is Noah centineo a producer on this?
and also if he is a producer how come Netflix wouldn’t pick this up considering that Noah dude stars in damn near every teen rom com on Netflix

actually surprised netflix didn’t pick this up. for every noah centino, there’s also a f*** you from mikey to industry heavyweights like jonah & spike jonze.
hollywood a small community, you piss the wrong person off or disrespect the wrong crew then goodbye

if you white you doing a little too much right now. Hate when white dudes try to shame ppl for not being “black enough”/“authentic” to their race or whatever. being super woke or whatever isn’t always a good thing.
just being a young black director making a movie like this is a big accomplishment for the film community + he cast all his real friends in this movie and some of them happen to be white. doesn’t get more authentic than that tbh.
just cause youre a black director does not mean you have to make a black movie/tell a black story. especially now when kids have way more diverse groups of friends/connections/stories.
Just watch 25:20 - 27:44 he explains casting white instead of black
also
MIKEY ALFRED: Love that movie. And there's a scene where the main character, the black dude, is in the CIA office. Some people come to visit the CIA, and the guy says to his partner, he says, "I'm so proud of you, man." And the guy says, "What?" And he says, "Integration is real. I'm proud." And they walk out. People are doing that now in movies where it's like, they put one black person or one woman in the thing and then they just pat themselves on the back.
so this is a skater movie like mid90s but starring the dude who played 4th Grade? hmmm

this has been explained a couple times already but the reason Mid90s was even able to have that cast was because of Mikey/illegal civ working on mid90s.
now he’s making a movie on his own and just casting his homies (most of the dudes in mid90s) instead of actors like a real one.
I can understand the confusion tho if you don’t know illegal civ or didn’t know they helped w casting/producing mid90s

oh nah i'm not saying Mid90s crew found these kids on their own, it was just an observation.
And to be fair this movie seems like skating seems to be the main focus, mid90s kinda reminded me of American Graffiti or Dazed & Confused in that it was more focused on what life was like during a certain decade.
The khaled emoji was moreso me wondering if the dude who played 4th grade can be an interesting leading man. I left mid90s mostly being impressed by Na-Kel

You're right and I am aware that I'm not in a position to judge authenticity, I can only say that I feel catered to in an annoying way. To me the protagonist looks like a bland surface every suburban skater kid can project themselves onto. And to act like Mikey doesn't know this is naive.
Just in terms of acting dude doesn't seem anywhere as charismatic and fascinating a screen presence as Na-kel. That's why I say it seems like a compromise. Because it looks like they went out of their way to make it as white as possible.
Additionally it's just the fact that basically every skate film ever already got this perspective and it would've been such an easy thing to make this stand out and bring something different to the table.
I will check this out because I'm interested but those are just some surface level red flags to me which make me think the whole thing might be more interested in commercial rather than artistic success.
