stuff like men and babadook where everything in the film is a metaphor for grief or other abstract societal concepts
there's some great movies that fit that bill but the style has kinda killed proper horror and they all just seem the same at this point
Werner Herzog's Nosferatu goes so hard. I still need to see the original. hyped for this

Eggers is the exception. He does it really well and you can tell he actually likes the genre.

It’s more about intent and effect than technique. It’s a know it when you see it sort of a thing. The ultimate example I’d say is The Blackcoat’s Daughter. This jokey review of it I think makes the point pretty well lol.
