When you get to heaven the first thing you hear is Charms
And in that manner, when you get to hell the first thing you hear is King Tubby
May as well just make that the run of King Tubby, Frida, Slew Foot. One of the most nightmarish 3 track runs I've ever heard.
The final day of recording for Shrines was a daylong, down-to-the-wire affair. The Greenhouse was packed well into the evening as artists came and went, elbow to elbow on the couch passing spliffs and writing. Each verse laid down in front of your peers, reading their faces and body language through the glass as the engineer runs it back. Worried calls to the star singer whom our lead single depended on, only to have her show up and absolutely crush it with no time left on the clock. It was the sort of recording session I rarely have anymore, and likely will not have again anytime soon. I remember thinking it was a fitting send-off for an album with such intimate beginnings; ELUCID and I writing in a UK Airbnb while Kenny Segal made beats. Kenny had just joined the tour and we had a couple day layover in Edinburgh, so Shrines started out of boredom as much as anything else (no offense Edinburgh!).
When the last of our guests departed the Brooklyn studio and ELUCID, Willie Green and I were gathering our things there was a palpable sense of victory. I told them the three of us should go out and get a drink when the album dropped, celebrate and talk about what was next.
Only a few months later, that seems like a distant memory. The album drops tonight, no one is going out to get any drinks and no one knows what is next. I don’t need to explain why. All of you have lived those same months we have, all of you see what is happening outside our doors right now, you know what grips our hearts. I also have no intention of conflating this album release with the defiant fury in America’s streets; that generational unmasking of our national schizophrenia, which always surprises even though we are never truly surprised. Suffice it to say, this is not what we imagined when June 5th was circled on the calendar. That said, great art has a way of “arriving” on it’s own time, notwithstanding our carefully plotted calendars and imagined intentions. I think I can speak for all of us at Backwoodz in saying that we think this is a special record. It is our sincere hope that Shrines is right on schedule, we just didn’t know it yet. Take care of yourselves, and each other.

Bruh woods seems like a HORRIBLE interviewee
lol but this interview was super interesting. Love to hear them talking about their discography a bit.
Slewfoot, Frida, Ramses II are pretty psychedelic
That Andrew Broder production. Man has mastered that ethereal, ambient style

"I been wasting time since the back of arrow Acura"
Lol seems like a reoccuring theme in woods music. Does he really regret being a rapper?

I took that line to be about empty hookups, continuing the whole failed relationships theme.

Really intersting read !

“Flow work like vintage ghosts
Scared, 'cause everything came true that I wrote
Every misfortune, the pain gloat
Every blank page stretch like a moat
Every road lead to an old verse, combin' my notes
Driveway weed choked, sweet weed smoke
Lure police to gingerbread trap houses in deep snow
Warned 'em, but whitey always swear he knows”
