I like how this is sonically very different from Hiding Places but other than that I don't have strong opinions based off first listen. That last verse was quite perfect though
It’s definitely like less of a cohesive experience than Hiding Places was. I’m trying not to pin it against Hiding Places cause it’s legitimately one of my favorite albums ever.
Maps is a good album, lots of really sick tracks - after first listen / early impression is that it’s like B-tier Woods. I’m hyped on it though.
Finished my first listen. Hiding Places is that album and I don't feel disappointed in the slightest with this.
Production-wise it is absolutely stellar. Kenny Segal's beats draw from such a unique well and are so masterfully crafted. The way they develop, the little flourishes and details, every beat is a journey. I think it's a disservice to necessarily think of this one as accessible woods, which is a take I'm seeing thrown around a fair bit. I do think sonically this is another fresh hole punched.
My immediate favourites are:
Kenwood Speakers
Soft Landing
Hangman
Baby Steps
Houdini
NYC Tapwater
I think it's the first woods album I feel comfortable describing as pretty to listen to. I'm not at the edge of my seat with this one, it's just one to drift off to.
And I think @sentient_sherm_bag is completely right. The somber heaviness of Hiding Places fit so perfectly for the woods of that time. But, between the massive success since that album and fatherhood, this ain't the same guy. The direction makes sense.
Not as high about the album as Pitchfork that made it seem like it's the album of the decade but Soft Landing is insanely good. I need him to ride more of these kind of beats, they suit him so well imo
Beautiful video for Soft Landing, which is directed by goddamn Tim Blake Nelson and his son
I love this beat so much, its so woozy and peaceful.
The standard of grimness is sky-high when your most accessible album still finds space to joke about a Charles Whitman-type mass shooter dutifully accounting for a breeze despite the brain tumor affecting his judgement. I love it

Lol this is the closest I've seen woods' face
just copped the vinyl...wish it was the deluxe but that's sold out now
really digging this album off the first couple spins but still picking up new things each listen
Slightly less opaque than prior releases, but only slightly. woods chuckles at his own jokes but it’s more often a shared laugh between him and the listener. This time, falling asleep in the back of a car doesn’t end with a fatal crash or waking up to undercovers tailing behind. The show happens, it’s just a funny story. Weed can be enjoyed, even as a commodity, so long as it’s not garbage. Ultimately “A lot of people will be upset but in the end it’ll all be fine”
Gotta get that deluxe, the reordered tracks + bonus material seem needed

F***!!
Baby Steps is such a perfect beat for ELUCID
Would love an elucid segal album
