HIDING PLACES (cover art)

This house, one of Albert Kahn's first commissions, was built in 1893 for the wealthy banker William Livingstone. In the 1990s, it was moved and replanted a few yards away on a vacant lot. Eventually, its facade collapsed in 2007 and the house was demolished a few months later.
Such an interesting album cover. And I never noticed the fence in the front—makes me think that woods is rapping from inside the house, and what he’s saying is fenced off because of how layered/obscure his writing can be.
does anyone have any songs from billy that they want to discuss? as in it is hard for someone to understand so you would like to break it down?
I’m definitely no expert on decoding woods, but any in particular you had in mind? I think woods called Bigfakelaugh his best Hiding Places track on Twitter. I think there’s a lot to dig in that one

“I’ve never respected genre. I've never respected styles, because I have them all. I worked myself into a corner because I rapped over a particular type of beat for a number of years. I wasn’t dipping into my bag of swords to pull out other blades that had gotten underused,” Elucid explained.
This is why I love Elucid as a creator. He has such a fluid vision of music, and the way he bends rules with rap is so interesting to me. A seriously underrated artist.

I still get the point of the track but Id like to know what you guys think about the chorus on Red Dust. "Its not the heat its the dust, its not the money its the rush, its not the weed thats a crutch"etc. I think hes just being Ironic from a standpoint of someone who keeps blaming the wrong things in his life when the real problems are right in front of him and nothing ever satisfies him. but what do you guys think its pretty ominous

I don't see it so much that way, more just him recounting his life experiences and what drove him. Being that the whole track is as serious as it gets and very personal and autobiographical, I always thought that chorus runs in the same vein.
'Its not the heat, its the dust' to me is just him calling back to his childhood and Zimbabwe and the like. You get used to the heat but its the dust which drives you crazy. He uses the same line on Spider Hole - '4 million USD hovering over some mud huts its nuts, its not the heat its the dust'. Almost like a kinda mantra a mom would drill into you if you're a kid in that climate.
He's made a fair few allusions in tracks to being a dealer when he was younger, or at least took part in some bad s***. And 'its the rush' I hear as him explaining why he did it. The money didn't drive him, nor weed it simply just helped him cope, but it was the rush that excited him.
Again when he says 'its not the act, its the touch'. its the rush that he enjoys, being there in the moment, not just the ends. And to me this ties into how descriptive he gets in that second verse, how intimately he describes wanting to kill that guy.
We getting closer

he raps like killing is a sexual act lol

I mean like I said before I think it's very deliberate that he describes it in intimate detail. Its not like he's fantasising about shooting someone, but literally slicing their throat open up close. Hence why he says 'its not the act, its the touch'.
But anyway, I can tell you with 100% certainty that its not about a lover or anything like that. In woods' own words its about a guy who really badly f***ed him over.

Well thank you for always giving well thought out responses. I really like your insights and engaging with your comments. And I agree it is someone who f***ed him over. Have a nice day!
