I’m still a jjjjound groupie but how tf did it even get so hypebeast?? S*** is like the antithesis of the other logomania stuff that flys off the shelf. I remember when the jjjjound club c’s dropped I went to the Montreal pop up and s*** was literally dead. Coulda bought 5 pairs if I wanted.

Hypebeast mentality still around, but fashion is trendy so it will change based on that no matter how hypocritical it may seem. That's the fashion industry for you. One extreme to the polar opposite extreme.

And this was just waiting to happen because first, a large chunk of people that got into fashion around 2016 and forward have dipped after the hype died and the people remaining probably wanna try something different; and second, this kinda aesthetic is huge in womenswear and has been for many years, and still crescendoes, so it was inevitable that it bled through to popular menswear. Surprised it's taken this long tbh.

i regret so much not going to the pop up to buy them but i was still in high school at the time and it would've taken me 1 hour just to get there with the bus and metro

That’s fair especially, especially what you said about womenswear rings true. I think travis wearing the brand gotta play a huge part too, plus the Kanye co-sign.

I was living in Ottawa and heard about it so on the way to Montreal me and my friends stopped over. I just didn’t grasp how hyped the brand was so I just went in got the shoes and dipped. I actually tried them on and walked around the store to see how comfy they were, if they were uncomfortable I would’ve left them there LOL

    jjjound was always hypebeast

the hypebeast has evolved over the years to a minimal Dunks/Work Pants/ALD/earth tone vibe as of current

i will take this moment to say that I think jjjound is incredibly lame as a brand and i can't believe people pay for them

  • May 21, 2021

also how can they be the anthesis of logomania when their whole gimmick is putting their logo on otherwise blank pieces

    ^ Totally agree with Shwin.

Kinda crazy to me how people still don't see that the dunks/new balances/loafers + work pant + work jacket has been the new hypebeast uniform.

Don't get me wrong: it's a lot better than the eboy/fake goth hypebeast or high-end off-white/lv logo hypebeast, but it's definitely one of the hottest looks out there.

It only makes sense to be honest. I feel like lots of older teens (15-18) got into streetwear around the time Kanye released TLOP, when Yeezy sneakers (and Off-White shortly after) were really popping off. Most of them have grown up by now and are gravitating towards something more 'adult contemporary'.

    Take:
    1) the maturing of the streetwear scene altogether (as evidenced by the death of r/streetwear and the rise of the throwing fits podcast/community which definitely focuses on a more yuppie public)
    2) general acceptance of wider clothing for men (result of more appreciation/yearning for the past times, finally following womenswear in this regard and maybe a reaction to skinny jeans peaking with the short-lived slp hedi trend not too long ago)
    3) fashion's increased appreciation for sustainability+quality (more sustainable mindset of the yuppies/youth, thrifting is now more popular than ever, brands like story mfg, arcteryx, salomon, new balance, vintage patagonia and other 'gorp-core' taking off)
... and you've created a perfect platform for 'quality menswear but also streetwear, if you know you know’ with brands like ALD, jjjjound, Patagonia and New Balance to take off.
Gorp took off for nearly the same reasons if you ask me. Difference being that it's more focused on sustainability and a yearning for the past (and pre-pandemic times in general) manifested in going outside more/appreciating and enjoying nature before we ruin it as is happening right at this moment, instead of sitting inside looking at screens all day.

Not saying this is a bad thing by the way, I basically dress like the aforementioned workwear hypebeast.

I think the thing with jjjjound that’s funny is that really only their sneaker collabs fly off the shelves. If you check their site rn basically everything they make is sitting in a full size run, but this Vans collab on the other hand is gonna be impossible to get and resell for $600 ( which is NUTS). I admired from a distance cause of the price on their clothes but I was gifted a jjjjound hoodie and it really is the perfect hoodie to me. Is it worth the price? I guess that’s a to each their own thing, the brand is local to me so I’m more attached it.

@argew I think that hypebeasts growing up and finding something more mature is a great point though, probably why ALD is so popular. It’s just so amusing to see this tiny online moodboard my friend showed me in school become this sneaker collab factory, they don’t even update the damn moodboard anymore. It all happened so quick and feels artificial.
