The KMA's are very similar to the Grammys, tho way less commercial/sales based. They award mainstream and underground musical artists regardless of their popularity.

I didn't even know he dropped an album, but the work he did with NewJeans definitely makes him deserving of the artist of the year win. Past wins/noms are a great way to discover some great Korean music that isn't just Kpop
