You might be able to undertsand a language and get by learning on youre own but to be close to a native speaker and actually master the language u gotta immerse yourself in it

As someone in the language learning community that has done what youre doing and studied it a lot more than you are and did that, In my experience it’s true. You cant learn the slang, dialects and just the experience of having to process it 24/7 unless youre immersed in it

That last sentence is ofc true tho it depends on what content you’re consuming also. Learner content isn’t very slang heavy no but I’m in native content now and I’m picking up on this stuff through repeated context.

I wasn’t tryna high horse you, it really is very debated whether “immersion” truly is efficient. Not saying it’s bad but no one really has the be all end all answers do this method of learning yet

The native content is very dependant on such small region changes though and theres so many different dialects of everything. Idk ive never met anybody that learned a language to the same level as a local and never having stayed in that country.
I thought like you guys too, until I did it a few years ago and I 180ed my perspective
