of course, i value melody and harmony/overall structure over anything else, if something doesn't have either of these 3 things it's got no hope of ever being replayed by me/liked

idk if i was always like this but i remember i noticed it more when i'd do composition and transcription exercises in school and during piano lessons, all the composers i like (mozart, ravel, rachmaninoff, chopin, tchaikovsky, gershwin) excel at those things, even my fav jazz musicians are similar with their approach to like arranging

idk much about non western music because u don't get taught it at conservatories, it's just the main western composers/compositions you study, i've peeped some indonesian and african pieces but that's more because composer x was influenced by that piece/style
