I also think at this point, the average consumer would be able to identify the next Switch as a separate product rather than an extension/addon that many thought the Wii U was. But idk if that was even a big reason why the Wii U failed

I think that and the games were the main reasons it flopped. People love to say the Wii U had a great lineup now but the sentiment wasnt the same back then. I know cause im a huge Nintendo fan and i didnt get a Wii U.
Switch 2 will have a post Mario movie and theme park 3d mario, post botw open world Zelda, post new horizons animal crossing, a new smash game, a new mario kart game and new pokemon games, plus a plethora of third party titles on an easy to work on devkit so i feel it cannot fail in any way. Cannot stress enough how partnering up with Nvidia and consolidating portable and home consoles have been possibly the best decisions they've ever made

Wii U failed because the hardware was a terrible concept in itself.

If the product itself stinks then you can’t expect the marketing department to be able to save it.

That’s why I roll my eyes whenever people attribute Wii U’s failure solely to marketing (beyond the “add-on” confusion thing).

Just look at where they got it right with Switch to see where everything went wrong with Wii U.

I always figured they were trying to make something like the Switch with the Wii U but the tech wasn’t there yet

Yep, the very-first feature they showed in the Wii U reveal trailer was the ability to “switch” to the Wii U GamePad to continue playing without the TV.

On top of the tech not being ready, they couldn’t go all the way with it because of another active handheld product they had at the time

Off-TV Play to me was the main feature of Wii U, but I feel as though they couldn’t bank on that feature alone when marketing the system in TV commercials because of the technical limitation of still being tethered to the room where the Wii U console is sitting in, as opposed to being fully portable like Switch.

Even then, Off-TV Play is a real downgrade compared to the simplistic motion controls from Wii (and don’t get me started on the half-assed dual-screen experience on Wii U between the GamePad and the TV screen, which was already properly realized with Nintendo DS).

Wii U is a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, BUT it paved the way for Nintendo Switch, so you could also argue that Wii U had to happen in this timeline

Nintendo’s hubris in the DS & Wii era led to their downfall in the following era.

    Hopefully history won’t repeat itself.

Switch 2 is probably not going to fail spectacularly like Wii U did, but if an arrogant Nintendo rears its head then we might see a string of bad moves that would make it way less successful than Switch.

  • May 27, 2024

This is all Nintendo needs to do when marketing Switch’s successor:

Nothing too fancy (“Super Switch”) or philosophical (Wii), just a big-ass "2" next to the existing logo..
Pray they don’t f*** this up

I think the fact they havent already announced and released it shows they are being very careful with their approach. Plus, their willingness to make things easier for third parties, long term expansion plans, stronger than expected hardware and multimedia projects show they arent resting on their laurels

  • May 27, 2024

I thought for a bit the Wii u was just the tablet, and im sure many casuals felt the same, since even in the console's box, the tablet takes the most space, and the console itself looked so much like the Wii i feel people didnt register it as an entirely different thing but as an accessory like the recent PS portal

Yeah in the recent investors’ meeting, Furukawa commented how revealing Switch 2 could impact sales of Switch 1, so that’s probably why they’re holding off as much as they can (which explains the 13.5m sales projection they have for Switch 1 this fiscal year).

They’re definitely gunning for that #1 best-selling system of all time milestone, dethroning PS2. That sweet sweet revenge arising from Nintendo becoming irrelevant during that era (GameCube deserved better..)

On Switch? Nothing right now. Last game I played on Switch was Super Mario Bros Wonder which I didn’t like. On my Xbox Series S? Fortnite (which I’ve played more or less since 2018) What are you playing?

Ohhh, what didn’t you like about Wonder if I may ask?

I’m currently playing Paper Mario 1 through NSO and trying out the Dragon Quest Monsters demo on Switch.

On my Xbox, I’m playing this game called The Finals..
Speaking of which, since you own an Xbox, you can play The Finals, which is free-to-play!
It’s probably the most creative and polished online shooter I’ve ever played. Never have I played an online shooter that rewards creative thinking a lot (oh and did I mention it’s free? 😆). It’s quite a breath of fresh air in the multiplayer FPS genre

I honestly just wasn't craving a 2D Mario game. I bought the game on a whim when I was out because of the hype and to give it a shot and see if perhaps it would surprise me. I liked the art style and sounds but I just wasn't in the mood for a 2D Mario so it got boring really quick and when I tried multiplayer with my fam it felt a bit messy/chaotic how the screen moves and such.

Paper Mario on Nintendo 64 is amazing! I have no experience with Dragon Quest though. Not the biggest JRPG fan.

I have not heard of The Finals before. I might check it out. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah never buy a game due to hype; I learned this the hard way with Starfield

Paper Mario 1 is indeed terrific! It gives me cozy vibes, and the combat can actually get intense lmao. I had to beat a boss while managing my health constantly cus I had no health items.. S*** was stressful, but I locked in and got through with it 😮‍💨

If you ever decide to play The Finals, I’ll send you some tips to get the best out of that game! We can even party up if you feel like it

I believe Nintnedo has been more considerate of their fans and business operations lately (sans the notorious DMCA notices). it seems like theyve been more willing to take a risk on fan favorites like Mario RPG and Kirby Dream Land Deluxe for example, and willingness to cooperate with Microsoft

I’d say it goes beyond those franchises; I really didn’t believe old niche IPs such as Advance Wars and Another Code would come back, so it’s nice to see Nintendo caring about those again (RIP AW though lol). It means nothing is off the table for a revival. Star Fox and F-Zero hopium

Lol I feel ya. I have bought quite a few games due to the hype in the past few years. Some of them I ended up loving (like Elden Ring, one of the GOAT games I've played), and others that I threw out really quick. Since the Switch dropped I've gotten way out my comfort zone when it comes to the games I play. I used to be very close minded in terms of games. I stuck to the Marios and Zeldas, but now I've put my feet all over the map.

Yeah, Paper Mario is really cozy indeed haha. Very charming and fun.

I will let you know if I get into it! I've struggled to get into First person shooters tbh I prefer Third-person where I can see my character, like in Fortnite haha.

Damn Elden Ring is that good? (I mean of course it is. It’s still being talked about 😏) Still gotta try a Souls game one day

Props to you for expanding your gaming horizons a bit 🫡 Never know what new experience you’ll end up liking next unless you give it a try!

Elden Ring was my first From Software/Souls-like game. In the beginning of the game I was a bit clueless about how to proceed and such, but with a little nudge from KTT fam in the Elden Ring thread I eventually got the hang of it and started to make my way through the massive world, getting beat up but getting back up and conquering. Toughest game I've ever played without a doubt. The enemies/boss fights can be very unforgiving and you will surely die a couple hundred times lol but the feeling when you beat them is so rewarding, and the world is just massive and insanely intricate. I went from a confused and weak little peasant to beating the whole game.

Yeah man, I was very close minded before haha but I've played a lot of games that were outside of my "Mario & Zelda" comfort zone in the past few years and I've ended up loving many of them. Besides Elden Ring I've played and enjoyed games like NieR Automata, Monster Hunter: Rise, Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy, Astral Chain, Splatoon 2.
