How in the world are "old heads" powerful tastemakers when they've always been slandered in rap.

A lot of the older audience that listens to DEHH, Joe Budden, or Ebro from Hot 97 weren't ever going to be the main source of success for the younger rappers in the 1st place.

How in the world is a stuck in the 90's rap fan stopping teens or young adults today from helping the younger rappers boost their sales or counter their narratives?

I'm a Wayne fan so I'm sure you know that many old heads used to hate on Wayne but Wayne was still able to sell like crazy even in the midst of it all.

The question you should be asking is: Did the old heads become bigger tastemakers or are even the youth or young adults today starting to not f*** with hip hop as much as they used to?

You got it with the last sentence

They aren’t hip hop fans like that

My brother in Christ....then why are the "older" rappers still largely dropping the best music and outrapping the game?

You think old head niggas or hip hop heads are flocking to Griselda, Kendrick, Cole, Nas, Billy Woods, Danny Brown, Gibbs, Pusha, Alchemist, Roc Marciano, and Run The Jewels over the newer school rappers because of "pop culture bullshit" as opposed to quality? Lmao.

And I know there's plenty of younger talent as well but it's not to the same degree and this is reflected in how the 30+ rappers are not only still outselling the game but putting out the best projects as well.

Peggy and Danny Brown literally shat on the newer generation like some old heads during the Scaring the Hoes rollout and guess what? Scaring the Hoes is still one of the best projects that came out this year so they can talk their s***.

I like Carti, Uzi, Ken, Yeat, Teezo, Cordae, Lil Baby, Durk, Youngboy, etc. but the standard is clearly lower for them. Doesn't mean they don't have good music though.

as a young guy into both old and new gen stuff, i concur this is true

when i listen to carti, i don’t expect nas quality

You’re saying the standard is lower for the Yeats, and Lil Baby’s of the world but then listed griselda like they’re some top tier s***.

You’re just proving OPs point. All you need is a sample based “real rap” type of beat and your s*** is automatically seen as a higher tier of music to some users on here. The only exception is someone like future who most of us kinda grew up with his music

I listed way more than Griselda. Funny how you overlooked that.

Also, Griselda has straight up put out better quality and cohesive albums than many of the newer rappers. It's not just about bars or rapping itself. It's about the quality of music as well.

Once again, the 30+ rappers are still outselling, outbarring, and putting out better albums than the majority of the rappers under 30.

That's not really helping the case of the anti-old head brigade.

When Shyne shatted on GKMC due to his bias, even the old heads in 2012 clowned him and basically took none of his rap opinions seriously after that.

For rapping and flowing, the bar is lower. But it remains the same when it comes to other criteria.

The thing is Griselda actually got popular with very semi mainstream attention without hopping on a trendy wave or sacrificing their sound at all. Which is once again what the “old heads” want to see

Also if you think their whole sound they came up on is just ripoff sample based 90s beats and can’t see the evolution in that style then your not listening

Funny you couldn’t come up with a reply to my other post

Because most of the other s*** you listed isn’t really making any waves in the culture tbh. That s*** is fodder for Reddit hip hop fans or “real rap” sticklers.

Like from 2018-Now none of those artist you listed are fw Youngboy. Not even close to him tbh.

And what does it matter if someone is “out barring” someone else. The young rappers that make music now don’t care about being the best lyricist so why would I judge them on that type of s***? That’s what I mean when I say the way you guys view it is very shallow. Like why would I judge a rapper on something he’s not trying to be.

To take this off Rap for minute, but my nigga, you rather support a repetitive artist like Yeat, then a artist like Jordan Ward who is actually putting out way better music than most of these niggas nowadays and actually has depth in his lyrics, and he's not even lyrical

This just shows me that y'all don't care about the songwriting as long as it's only catchy and the beat is hard lmaooooooo.

You do realize it’s possible to like Yeat and Jordan ward right? It doesn’t have to be one or the other

Gibbs Roc and especially someone like Billy woods is leaps and bounds ahead of a Yeat and lil baby rapping wise and we shouldn’t have to ignore that lol. It’s like just being objective makes you pretentious now? Wtf lmao

Now does Yeat and Baby make more entertaining or casually listenable music than Billy woods or Roc Marciano? Probably

Nobody said that they were "making waves in the culture." That's an entirely different argument.

Youngboy may be more popular but he doesn't have a consensus top tier or quality album yet. He could get there cause there's plenty of time for him but he's still mainly a quantity over quality type of guy.

And rapping is literally one of the core essenses of hip hop. It's fine to have some non-lyrical rappers around. That's always been a thing. But the utter lack of lyrical or technical rappers in the modern mainstream is concerning imho.

And even the newer alternative types blowing up ain't that lyrical save for some like MIKE which is also concerning imho.

Your first sentence is ridiculous when you ask for reccomendations from people throughout this thread just to come back with some s*** like that. Lmao that makes it a trap question with no right answer because once again the only answer you or anyone asking that type of question would accept is someone who’s already popping with co signs which brings us back to the original problem

Youngboy got multiple albums seen seen as top quality.

And the second paragraph is what it all boils down to. Y’all prefer a certain type of rapping. That’s all it is

Put me onto 5 new hip hop artists that are all at least semi poppin in the mainstream and have their own unique sound or at least make a variety of different sounds

They’re ahead of them rapping wise but who’s making the better songs? Who’s making the more interesting music.

And what is good rapping anyway? I don’t like trying to objectify s***. Like sure on paper someone like NF or Logic is probably objectively a better rapper than Chief Keef but let’s be real, almighty so is packing up any project that both of them ever made

Like really. That just shows they don't care about the actual depth of music. Because if these guys cared about it, then a artist like JID would be way more bigger than he is now. As long as it bumps in the whips and it's entertaining, it's amazing to them.

Depends on what you listening for

I love Chief Keef but I’ve absolutely had to turn that s*** off after about an hour or so and go back to Hov or Ye or whoever. For someone who cares that way about what NF and Logic talking about more than what Keef is talking about that’s not far fetched

Unironically and dead serious Billy woods absolutely makes more interesting music than lil baby lol the f***? Saying that as someone who remembers when My Dawg dropped and fw all those “hard” tapes

It’s hilarious because y’all will die on this hill yet Destroy Lonely or Yeat own fanbase said their last projects were mid and they pretty much did the same s*** they always do. Lmao this s*** funny af

Billy woods, armandhamer and Ka type s*** is just not enjoyable music to listen to imo. My friend shows me honor killed the samurai when it came out and I couldn’t f*** with it.

The main criticism of Lonelys last album was that it was too long but still had some great songs. Idk what Yeat fanbase said about his last album
