Did y’all hear that scream during the gym celebration scene? Like when it was dead silent?

Unbelievable editing. Just off enough for you to notice it and for it to scare you...

Yeah. The visuals were good but it’s really not THAT visual of a movie to the point where IMAX is necessary to fully enjoy it.

As far as the movie in general there’s a lot of great scenes and performances in it, but I thought the pacing was bad.

The clearance hearing & Strauss stuff were not interesting enough to justify that much screen time. The movie even acknowledges it at the end “hey Strauss maybe Oppenheimer & Einstein were actually talking about something more important than you.” Exactly so why did we just spend an hour+ on Strauss?

Edit: after sitting on it for a while and getting my thoughts together ima just admit it; this movie was very disappointing.

It completely lacks a centerpiece. The test bomb did NOT do it. The movie is 2 hours of build-up and 1 hour of fallout with no climax. I understand that it would’ve been tough to depict tastefully, but Nolan needed to show something from Japan to showcase the horrors of what Oppenheimer had done.

As it stands the movie is just hours of guys in rooms telling us that bombs are bad. There’s no captivating debate here, there’s no tension. I don’t care about Oppenheimer’s security clearance. I don’t care about Strauss’s cabinet confirmation.

yeah i would never watch this movie in a theater again, unnecessary long. Film was objectively good tho, Nolan always delivers with overall production

Maybe on a rewatch the film is better but I’m gonna watch it at home

thank god I didn’t go watch this film faded, first hour would have killed me. I’m telling my friends who havent seen it yet to eat an edible at the beginning so it hits mid movie

Typical american marvel type of movie fan. Its not about loudness or the bigger the better effect. Its about tension and erie sillence what makes it more scary than stupid big bang

brother, the only MCU movies ive seen are the spiderman no way home, first and last avengers and the first captain america.

    stupid insult.

im going into a Nolan movie which have amazing sound and then the climax of a nuke expecting it to be f***ing amazing. Instead, i got silence, a look of the explosion, then the sound wave. I ALREADY know a nuke is supposed to be scary. IMO, if they DID include a more loud crazy sound to the bomb, it wouldve made it more SCARY. Especially with the trailers showing the shots of an explosion with the sound. And those scenes in the trailer, we got in the beginning lmao.

I got tickets to 70mm and now im cancelling them because this movie isnt worth it to see it in that.

A stupid ass b**** stood up to go the bathroom in the middle of the f***ing explosion and blocked the view for everyone

She took me out of the film

bruh i had an old b**** burping the entire movie the sound of that mixed in with the insanely loud scoring of the film made it super hard to hear what anyone was saying for a good portion of the film

I don't think the point was to scare tho, it was to replicate what it'd sound like. The clip you posted is great but its very inaccurate.

Atomic bombs have a massive sound delay because you're miles away. I get wanting an instrumental maybe, but there is no "more loud crazy sound to the bomb." That silence wasn't an artistic choice, it was for accuracy

Here's an example. This takes 30+ seconds

I was expecting something akin to this, which was way better executed, especially when it goes inside the cloud.

    Pure art, and far scarier

Yes, I know about wanting it to be realistic. Trust me, I’ve seen PLENTY of war footage so I know how explosions work. But for ME personally, for a movie about the first atomic bomb, a Nolan movie (where sound is usually amazing) I just expected something more from that scene.

Before the test scene, with the scenes showing the atoms moving and stuff, the sound for those scene were literally shaking the theater. Every time those scenes happened, I was thinking “oh man when the bomb drops, this is going to be amazing”

Also, the explosion didn’t look great. I know it’s practical but man I didn’t expect it to look worse than what I expected . And to you guys saying it looks like the real one are lying to yourselves.

  • Jul 25, 2023

No lie I liked the silence when the bomb first went off and all you hear is Oppenheimer breathing, made the scene more intimate and exceeded expectations. I get what ya'll are saying about sound delays, but I guarantee a lot of people were expecting a loud explosive sound as soon as the boom exploded, but having a moment of silence first was great.

Lol why do ya'll always use the MCU as an "insult" just when someone has a different opinion?

I viewed it as "the aftermath being louder than the creation/testing" I f***ed with the direction heavy.

I knew people would start saying that too

It just takes away from the 2 hour build up to the explosion

I mean i thought it looked great personally but to each his own. idk what others here said that was my first post here lol.

I was at the 2nd to last row in the back of the Lincoln Square crowd and we were all in a trance during the silence. The money shot I was looking for was always when it went full 1.43:1 ratio for when the explosion rose and i got exactly what i came for.

I thought the atoms were cool but i was never feeding that into expectations of the bomb itself.

it absolutely was intentional lmao, its an artistic decision to make the loudest parts of the film reflect the characters' imaginations and mental state rather than the actual explosion itself (which was still quite loud). disagreeing with that artistic decision is ofc fine, but if nolan rly wanted to make it loud he easily could have
