He's been in the wilderness for a while, I think it's a bit disingenuous to frame it otherwise. He was a working actor and was in good things but i wouldn't label him as relevant
I feel like he even laid this out a bit in his speech

UnityI agree, my two favorite films of the year were barely nominated and had no shot at winning anything last night. But if you're going to speak with some level of authority on the Oscars, the absolute bare minimum you can do is actually watch the nominated films, all of which were back in theaters last week
Nope I do it in reverse. Watch the show, take in the reception and then watch the movies during the dead time of sports through that lens

guess the nostalgia that I have of him notably king kong and (not so long ago) peaky blinders is what gave me a different perception
