Off of impact, influence, and lyricism, he definitely deserves his due because he is up there with the greatest rappers of all time in that regard. I don't think there has ever been a single rapper to have as many quotes as him being used on as wide a scale as they have been ("0-100", "YOLO" (obviously not something he originated, but the popularity spiked when he said it), "steph curry with the shot boi"). And he has pretty much dominated the most of any other rapper (aside from possibly Eminem) and it clearly shows.

However, musically, I think its no surprise that he is massively lacking and he has no clear classic. Take Care is the closest one but for me, I refuse to ever acknowledge it is one when it has songs that are so horrendously bad that most people just silently ignore that they are there (Make me Proud, Practice, Headlines being one of his least memorable singles ever, etc.). And his other projects have even more duds on them. Even commercially big rappers that were clowned for being "fads" like 50 cent or Nelly atleast had one great album that everyone could admit.

So when it comes to ranking Drake as a pop icon, he is definitely one of the biggest to ever do it and he will be remembered in the same lines as an Elvis Presley or Madonna when all is said or done. But he doesn't have the qualitative output that a Kanye or Jay Z or Madonna or David Bowie or Prince or even MJ have.

I think he will be looked back along the same lines as a Queen or an Elvis Presley. Clear icons who have songs you can not deny are timeless, but when it comes to essential albums, its virtually 0.

You lost me at the part where you said Eminem was the most dominant rapper or something like that.

Most versatile Hip-Hop artist of all time by a landslide. Definitely one of the intangibles that puts him in the goat conversation. Every goat has an intangible along with tangible stats (such as classics, hits, etc) An example would be Kanye's genius creativity being unmatched in hip-hop when it comes to crafting bodies of work.

    how is he not?

What other rapper sold nearly 2 million first week and then proceeded to sell a million + copies 3 times in a row?

No other rapper in history has done that.

  • Oct 16, 2020

In terms of popularity, he’s somewhere in top ten of rappers. In terms of quality/albums, he’s not in my top ten.

They do. Every old head from snoop to method man to nas says that hes one of the best

In terms of numbers, they do. In terms of the quality of his albums, they don’t.

He dominated the charts because of his largely White fanbase but his relevance in the culture started with TMMLP and ended with Encore.

I cant say hes the most dominant Hip Hop artist ever. I'd prolly have to give it to The Canadian. He does the numbers and still has a very real presence in the culture.

  • Oct 16, 2020

huh? when they say ''drake is one of my favourite rappers'', what exactly does that have to do with numbers??

news flash but Kanye, Jay, Drake, any any other huge rap icon has a predominantly white fanbase as well no matter how much they or us act like they don't.

Eminem's relevance in the culture died around Recovery I would say. Yeah that period between MMLP and Encore was by far his most dominant but even with Recovery, he dominated that whole year in rap charts wise and had the most talked about album from the mainstream.

Also, I didn't say Eminem was more dominant. I argued he is the only other rapper who has a case. I would argue Drake's true dominant Eminem-esque peak has been going on since Views because before that, he wasnt selling nearly to that prime Em standard.

So it has been 4 years, opposed to the 5 year dominant peak Eminem was on.

Just cause Marshall sold a bunch of records doesnt mean he was dominating anything.

I don't think he was ever looked at as The Best.

At least not by anyone who was truly entrenched in the culture.

how do you define who is "truly entrenched in the culture"?

Its easy to look at youtube comments and be like "yeah these are the ONLY people who praise Eminem" but Eminem had a massive appeal among the black community as well. Theres a reason people like Lebron James or other black celebrities who came from similar means along that age group hold Eminem in such a high regard.

Most people who were in their teens witnessing that era would probably tell you the two GOATs are Eminem and Wayne.
