For sure a lot of people are just irredeemable but there's been something like 1400 school shootings since 1970 - that's an average of like almost 30 a year. Is it possible that every single person committing those shootings every year is just part of that irredeemable part of the population? If so, that would imply there's a shockingly high % of the population which is actively destructive to society, which has some pretty bleak implications.
I agree though "mental health" is a copout. When people talk about "improving mental health", what do they really mean? Just pathologize behavior and adjust the schooling system? Introduce more anti-bullying or social moderations (or less)? More SSRIs? Force people into therapy? Talking about "improving mental health" is a kinda easy way of avoiding the real topic of "why is society so f***ed that we need to put on banaids to 'improve mental health' to begin with"

tbqh i honestly agree, it's a lot of elements at play that you can't fix with a tiny bandage

the issue to me is very much the steady decline of material conditions in society over the past 40 - 50 years, there were school shootings before 1970, the earliest documented going back to the mid-1800s, but these were mainly interpersonal disputes turned violent, apolitical mass shootings with the purpose of racking up body counts didn't really start happening until the 80s - 90s, which was an tumultuous era in terms of the youth and there was a steady decline of material conditions due to neoliberal policy

f***ed up people have always existed and did horrific acts of violence, radicalized in some way, but i feel like as a domestic American issue mainly, it is a result of our declining material conditions and the failures and stigma in maintaining mental health as a result, and firearms being extremely accessible, and America's culture being inherently violent, as a reflection of our society.

imo gun control won’t do much, because it’s bigger than that, you have to get to the core of the issue
