Do you discipline your children? To what extent? And if not, why? Has it worked for you?

Not a parent, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more jaded to the thought of physically disciplining my children, as someone who grew up under a traditional black household which that was more or less normalized. I’ve though more of alternatives to this such as holding books above the head and things of that nature, I feel like there is a name for that but I can’t think of it rn

I know what you’re saying. I think it’s called positive punishment or something. I believe it’s the best way. Ass whooping are short lived and don’t really make you think about what you did wrong.

Hard labor like digging holes and holding books would make me never want to do anything bad again lol

I think a good punishment only has to be implemented once

sitting down devising ways to punish a kid is crazy lol

no parent is an expert just be making sh*t up as they go there should be some kind of education/license to be a parent or something

should see a therapist or at the very least try to find out why the kid is acting out before last resorting to punishment

Kids act out because they’re kids. They push boundaries to see what they can/can’t get away with. I’m not talking about deep-rooted psychological meltdowns or anything like that.

There’s nothing wrong with thinking of a fitting punishment for your kid. Lotta parents think of some s*** on the fly and end up defaulting to an ass whoopin, and not every situation calls for that

I had a similar situation. I didn’t get beat for everything but I definitely got whooped way more than my younger sibling did and they grew up as a disrespectful lil brat. They’re a lil better these days tho

positive punishment is a form of conditioning where you add an unwanted stimulus to prevent a behavior (same as spanking), and empirically it's the worst form of reinforcing behavior, i think you may be thinking of something else

I grew up getting beat with belts, hangars, etc whenever I got in trouble. I’m not a parent, but I knew that whenever I decide to have kids, i’ll never hit them to discipline them.

They’ll either do pacers until they’re out of breath, push-ups, squats, or some kind’ve physical activity

Spanking is only one form of positive punishment, but there are also other things like labor, extra chores, etc

What is the most effective method of punishment?

not a parent, but i have 3 nieces and nephew all under 5 y/o and i’m a huge part of their lives

as someone that grew up being beaten (it’s not ‘discipline’ it’s child abuse - i got hit with a rolling pin once. nothing a 5 year old does warrants being hit with a rolling pin) i would never condone physical discipline with kids. there are better ways. miss me with the “spare the rod spoil the child” s***
