Yes it is
Everything about DL is how the book is
The stuff with her and Takeshi is really entertaining
Leo’s character seems like he’s a bit remixed
Been a while since I read I guess. Just don’t remember marshal arts and karate and stuff
I always wanted to get into PTA. My first movie was licorice pizza lol and I didn’t like it. Figured it’s just some mid career nostalgia project type of movie.
I watched there will be blood and the master over the weekend though and damn I didn’t like blood too much and didn’t like the master at all
and I was super excited to watch both, been putting them off for years now. Blood was good and some amazing scenes but honestly I should’ve watched it like 10 years ago it feels super overrated if you watch it just now. The master is crazy I couldn’t find anything redeeming about it. I’m still super excited to check out his other stuff, betting big on phantom thread, boogie nights and magnolia but yeah starting off rough

I mean you went in just about the worst order you could.
The Master is a challenging movie.
Licorice Pizza took me two tries to enjoy as a comedy.
There Will Be Blood is a good shout, but you should probably start with Boogie Nights and Magnolia.

I still don't love Inherent Vice and Joaquin is my GOAT and the Pynchon book I read was good. Still haven't seen Phantom Thread. But yeah, luckily there is a lot of variety in his catalog.
If you do prefer Boogie Nights and Magnolia, you might like Robert Altman's stuff more (Short Cuts, The Player). PTA got his start on an Altman movie and those two are especially influenced by him.
PTA really is an acquired taste, but once you get the taste, everything else can't quite scratch that itch, no matter how different his films are.
Rewatching Inherent Vice for the first time since its release was truly one of the best decisions I made last year. Turns it out it just took some time and life experience to appreciate. Haven't been able to stop thinking about it since, such a beautifully poignant film. Skyrocketed to just a notch below The Master as my favourite PTA.

Almost always best to do the chronological method fam. Especially for major goats.

The Master and Inherent Vice better than TWBB in your opinion?

One of the biggest fails of my life was jumping straight to Tarkovsky's Solaris
turned me off Russian film for years before I finally checked out Ivan's Childhood and now he's one of my top 5

Damn hated tree when I saw it in theaters nd was so mad at comps with the master. 2001 one of my faves too. Haha maybe some things just don’t click. I remember as a kid I felt it was quite experiential but as a black kid from chi the experience and characters were too far afield for me to even enjoy abstractly.

oh naaah that Stalker movie night was one for the books, we got wasted on beer (no idea what we got ourselves into) and still managed to sit through it all
I still have a love-hate relationship with that movie

Dude
we ate a pile of shrooms and had one person that wasn't in the usual crew who could not handle. We didn't even notice his bad trip descend on him, just looked back and he was rolling around on the floor moaning about "wobbly legs". the scene where the midget gets flung behind the door ruined him apparently. Took hours of comforting (and Nacho Libre) to get him back down to earth.

Dang jealous
I was a fan back when he was still a ghost and iirc saw New World in theatre but idk what I was doing when TOL came out.
I can see it being too far afield for you to stan it but I'm surprised you didn't find anything to enjoy there. I'm kind of the opposite, the further afield from my usual experience, the more fascinating a film is (usually).

Yea idk didn’t click. I usually look for kernels in characters and plots that I can relate to emotionally like that’s why I love film. Like paths of glory is not something literally to relate to but emotionally I get it. Kinda why I have a harder time with novels, been reading a couple otessa mosfegh books and I’m so cold on the characters. Maybe there’s a similar limited subjectivity in TOL I have trouble with.
Meh maybe not enough humor but also not v versed on malick only seen badlands and days of heaven which r pretty dope.
