Kinda. It’s unfortunate that PTA isn’t a Nolan-level name in terms of popularity because he doesn’t have nearly the amount of support rallying around him, but I guess that’s the benefit of Nolan making a career out of “baby’s first” movies.
And online narratives ABSOLUTELY can tank a movie during awards season, and there’s no bigger example than last year where Emilia Perez absolutely would’ve won Best Picture if the voting closed in say early January.

But yeah Paul was never gonna be as popular while making stuff like Phantom Thread and Master but we're better off this way

Sure, but it was a weird year in general. I feel like people forget because by the time we got to the Oscars, Anora ended up sweeping, but after the post-Golden Globes eruption of hate completely tanked Emilia Perez, no real clear frontrunner emerged for the majority of the rest of that awards season. In addition to Anora, The Brutalist and Conclave all at one point looked like the favorite.
One Battle has a VERY strong #2 in Sinners behind it, with a lot of genuine enthusiasm. It’s not going to take anywhere near an EP level tank to potentially get people to pivot.
