I never understood why people criticize a movie or show because there aren’t characters to root for. Personally I don’t usually watch things with the intent to root for characters . Sometimes a movie is just full of unredeemable or bad people, and that’s fine.
Also I really hate how often these publications talk about box office and budgets numbers now. We should just appreciate that PTA was given a giant budget to bring his vision to the big screen
https://twitter.com/variety/status/1905705543005790508Yeah, but PTA's only made one film like that so far, and that's There Will Be Blood. In all the other films you're supposed to root for the main characters.

and TWBB was his biggest hit
so these people dont know what they even want (obviously)
flower moon got up to $158.8 million and that was an apple TV struggle theatrical release
gatsby - 356 million
wolf of wallstreet - 407 million
revenanet - 533 million
ouatih - 391 million
obviously lots of factors to adjust when comparing, like the fact people go to see movies way less in 2025, the co-stars of those movies vs the co-stars of this movie, the release dates etc
but i think factoring ALL those, looking at the trailer, looking at the test screen reactions....it could very well be a success
Part of it is the assumption that it'll play in large format theaters like IMAX and pull in extra dollars that way. But it's a crowd pleaser. I would expect good word of mouth
Mystic River too but it works
"is that my daughter in there" scene is iconic

i was put off the first couple times trying to watch it when i was younger because of that scene in his warehouse early on when the score is super loud, the sound effects are all blaring and you can't really hear what is being said
The warehouse scene when he’s on the phone with the scammer, the workers are f***ing up dropping boxes and the sister is nagging????
And the toilet plunger fails him

https://twitter.com/variety/status/1905705543005790508Variety has been pushing anti-Mickey 17 stuff for a month and pro-AI Ghibli stuff all week so it's not surprising that they've moved on to tearing this down as well. They're a nasty organization that has taken a firm stance against artists this year
"They don't know who to root for" mfs thinking movies are an nfl game
It's remedial thinking for the lowest form of moviegoer that should probably be at home watching a Netflix Original on their iPad instead. I hate that their opinions have to be factored in
Randomly caught the trailer and it looks great imo
It came on as an ad and I usually turn trailers off right away but this caught my eye before even knowing what it was

Marketing works!

https://twitter.com/variety/status/1905705543005790508film BO discussion gets as much traction as actual film discussion in modern times, it feels like…this type of coverage on test screenings feels relatively new though
The coverage of this from Hollywood media is getting weird
Execs trying to cover their ass and make it seem like any potential flop is PTA’s fault

Yeah.. def feels like someone higher up pulling their weight by using their connections to the media to push these stories... this kind of reporting doesn't feel normal for most films before it's release lol it's
was variety reporting on the financial situation on The electric state months before it released?

Variety is so sketchy

Yeah the whole “there needs to be likable characters” is such a played out rule in Hollywood.

https://twitter.com/variety/status/1905705543005790508If we’re being real gray characters are always the best. The ones who aren’t 100% good and also not 100% bad.
How can anyone see Leo yelling "VIVA LA REVOLUCIÓN ✊" and struggle to have characters to root for
Also like I just mentioned above...it's breaking even easily. $300m WW is realistic
Literally what I thought
was variety reporting on the financial situation on The electric state months before it released?
Nope, but they "reported" on Mickey 17 countless times and will do the same for this one
There is a Netflix and WB backed hate campaign against theatrical releases
I fear we're nearing the end times folks
