"I just don’t get how I can’t express my opinion about this film and it’s left at that" bruh it was like mad times when @Elric was like agree to disagree and y'all kept debating we can't pull this now
And that one killing off screen is literally a plot point that foreshadows the ending of the movie, so it's kind of important too lmao
Because that agree to disagree s*** weird as hell. Like you agree with what I’m saying but then you wanna agree to disagree?
And with Hollywood is that what the entire movie is about? Nah, it’s about Leo’s character tryna make it as a washed up actor. I forgot about Cliff killing his wife cus it’s not a major part of the movie.
But lemme make sure I’m following, are you saying what PTA did with pedophilia is what QT is doing with brutal murder?
the romance in this movie, if it could even be called that, isn't portrayed as sweet or healthy and any moments where it surrenders to whimsy are underlined with a tinge of discomfort that you're just ignoring. but also i just don't care about the age gap lol it's such a non issue and the controversy is ridiculous. all of pta's movies are about f***ed up people and i really don't know why people are becoming so worked up by this one just because it dares to explore relationships (the kind that did and still do happen) like this
Why don’t you care about the age gap? It’s a 25 year old with a 15 year old…
How is pedophilia a non issue?

because it's a movie and because it doesn't endorse it lol, it's a controversy for and by wannabe moral puritans on tiktok and twitter who can't think of movies as emotionally complex and instead choose to interpret depiction as endorsement

Making light of it, yeah. Any violent action Cliff takes during the movie is clearly meant to either be seen as funny or heroic
while we're talking about this in context of tarantino, him living in tel aviv is a much greater moral issue than anything that happens in licorice pizza lol
because it's a movie and because it doesn't endorse it lol, it's a controversy for and by wannabe moral puritans on tiktok and twitter who can't think of movies as emotionally complex and instead choose to interpret depiction as endorsement
And you believe all that even tho PTA himself defended their relationship as being nothing wrong wit it because “there isn’t a provocative bone in this film”

But isn’t that all QT films? He’s always done wild violence. Some senseless, some meaningful. He owns it.
Whereas PTA is defending this by saying there’s not a provocative bone in this film. See the difference?
And I’ve already said QT a wild creep/weirdo and my dislike for his comments on racism.

There's a difference between say, the violence in Django where he's rescuing his wife and killing slaveowners and the violence in Hollywood where Cliff is a violent wife-murdering d***head who just happens to be charismatic lol
And you believe all that even tho PTA himself defended their relationship as being nothing wrong wit it because “there isn’t a provocative bone in this film”
it's not provocative, because provocation is mostly useless and usually makes for bad art. all he's doing is presenting two characters, maybe some of the first relatively complex characters in his filmography, and showing why and how they're so drawn to each other. call it grooming if you want, i just don't see how that changes the film at all. movies that contain easy answers or solutions aren't interesting movies, and i don't go to the cinema to have my morals reflected back to me.

That’s why I said some senseless and some meaningful. But he owns that. Same way Sean baker owned what he was doing with red rocket. Meanwhile PTA hasn’t owned s*** cus he doesn’t think anything is wrong with it.

Imma take your word for this then and look up what PTA said

why do you want directors to be so morally righteous lol, to tell you in interviews that, yes, you're supposed to feel uncomfortable, because i don't trust enough in my movies for you to make up your own mind. if that's your approach to art, you should read the list of names that signed a petition for roman polanski's release and then struggle to find any movies to watch

Lmao I didn’t even know he said it til niggas ITT posted his quote.

Nigga he’s not telling you to make up your own mind, he’s literally telling you there’s nothing wrong with the relationship in this film.
Does it surprise you how some people are reacting to the age difference between Alana and Gary?
There’s no line that’s crossed, and there’s nothing but the right intentions. It would surprise me if there was some kind of kerfuffle about it, because there’s not that much there. That’s not the story that we made, in any kind of way. There isn’t a provocative bone in this film’s body.

So what is he tryna say when he means that's not the story we made
I'm kinda confused

Well to me with him saying “there’s no lines that’s crossed” it seems like he’s saying “we didn’t make a pedophile story”…….but you did. There’s clear lines that’s crossed. And for the filmmaker to deny that is crazy.
Twitch bout to start To Catch a Predator movie characters edition
Nah ima start on KTT wit some these questionable users ( no Sega that isn’t aimed at you)
Nigga he’s not telling you to make up your own mind, he’s literally telling you there’s nothing wrong with the relationship in this film.
so? i don't see the issue, he doesn't interpret the relationship as grooming and neither do i really, because from what information he gives us about these characters, there's never direct intent there. her "attraction" to gary is one not based in looks but in what he represents and can do for her, he's simultaneously more "mature" and steadfast in his life, while also still being a teenager. thus he becomes what she desires to be, but can't find in herself to become, while also being in the stage of his life that she hasn't yet been able to evolve beyond. is their relationship sus? sure. is it a movie about romance? not really, it's about a push and pull between emotional maturity/immaturity as portrayed through two characters who come to reflect this dynamic. it's about being so lost in life and that you attach yourself to someone 10 years your junior because he represents both emotional comfort and reassurance, along with a drive in life that she wishes she had. the very fact that gary is so young is what makes the movie work, because without the age gap it would just be a movie about a relationship, which isn't what it is. it ending with alana finally giving into her feelings after the scene with benny safdie and his boyfriend is a moment born of great fear and cowardice on her part. it functions as a slide back into adolescence by a character who simply doesn't know how to move beyond it and i don't know how anyone interprets it as a happy ending or somehow being representative of the beginning of a relationship.

Nigga you saying all that but bottom line it’s still a 25 year old falling in love with a 15 year old. Y’all sound nuts rn for capping this hard

why have you even been in this thread for so long if you're resistant to discussing what the film is doing lol. a lot of films are about people doing things they shouldn't be doing
because it's a movie and because it doesn't endorse it lol, it's a controversy for and by wannabe moral puritans on tiktok and twitter who can't think of movies as emotionally complex and instead choose to interpret depiction as endorsement
This is a very pretentious post lmao lemme give you a link to the thread

Sometimes movies just be movies, not everyone going in with Letterboxd in hand ready to deeply a***yze why a grown woman falls in love with a teenager by the end. If you can’t see the controversy in that… idk what to tell you
Y’all talking too much about a movie that’s not even one of PTA’s bests
Repeating those post cause this too much
both sides

this is an issue of your own making, not anything representative of movies themselves. approach them however you want, but there's nothing pretentious about being critical in the way you watch them. it's just laziness tbh and often leads to worse movies
