For those saying they felt alot of scenes were pointless this is a good write up on the relationship dynamic and other plot points in the film...most specifically Alana's decision making in the film

Denzel playing an aging washed up actor in the vein of Birdman but with PTA style

Really wanted to love this, only ended up enjoying it enough. There’s a lot in it that I think is good but for the most part nothing really grabbed me the way some of PTA’s other films did. The cast was great tho, specially the leads they both did great with what they had. Bradley Cooper was f***ing great in this too but agree with the sentiment that the story is weighing down these interesting characters. 7.5/10

Even if parts of it grow on me, which I’m like 90% sure it will, I don’t think I’ll feel different about the ending. The truck scene was SOOOOO F\*\*\*ING GOOD and that silence as Alana realizes that this dude is a kid still was really powerful. Like it all came to her head. Then it just ends like a happy ending Hollywood style. It just felt… lazy. As if that whole scene didn’t matter. I see people say it’s bittersweet in reality that it’ll never work but they could’ve easily conveyed that if they wanted to. Instead it ends with them passionately kissing and saying I love you. Oh well

after the truck scene she tries to make herself open for the politician only to find out he's in the closet...basically after that and walking the guys boyfriend home she realizes that "they're all s***" and decides to just run back to the one who she's most comfortable with and always winds back up with somehow...whereas she spent the whole movie prior to that trying to go after these other toxic, older men bc she thought that was what she was supposed to do basically...I really suggest reading the link I posted which breaks down Alana's decision-making throughout the film pretty well and is probably the best summary of that I've been able to come across...here's an excerpt though

"Is it romantic? Is it a love story? Kind of. Structurally, it’s a romance, and there’s all that running. I have found it sort of disingenuous when people (including cast and crew!) have described the movie as about “friendship” or “connection,” or something; it seems very clear to me that it’s about attraction, but not about sexual attraction, per se. It’s much more about what infatuation represents, existentially. Infatuation is about wanting someone, about being pulled toward them like a magnet, but it’s also about your magnetic pull on them. Wanting to be wanted is a little adolescent, but it’s also quintessentially human, and it’s an itch most of us have found weird ways to scratch in this life at one point or another. At its worst, this kind of thing is self-involved. But at its best, infatuation is like the McCartney song; two people giving each other something, unable to verbally express their gratitude, rolling their wheel hearts to one another."

  • i read the plot synopsis for this movie and left more confused than when i started

Yeah, I understand why she went to Gary at the end but I guess I expected more from the film then to make it a big music swelling, happy ending when I interpreted it like her choice was more impulsive. I think they were both not good for each other, with Gary pulling her maturity to further his confidence and ego while Alana was trying to grasp onto her youth and that’s why I loved the scenes of Alana after the truck and Gary discussing the arcade because they were moving and growing in different directions and it made sense thematically. I didn’t really see the bittersweet ending that others did, it felt very lovey and storybook and I wish it gave more.

  • Jan 3, 2022

I read a post saying that it would’ve been stronger and more resonating if it cut to black right when they fell over in front of the theater to leave their connection strong and not make it definitive and to give people the chance to interpret what they felt after. I really would’ve loved that

and that's fine if you didn't think they were good for each other...I think the point though was that she went back to Gary bc he was the only one who really made her feel special or at least more than the others...doesn't mean it's a perfect situation by any means and I think your interpretation and disappointment at them not moving forward and instead running back to each other is completely fair and probably even intended to an extent

My coworker had a good point that right from the start of Red Rocket you knew Mikey is a piece of s*** whereas for the most part the romance is glorified and being praised by critics in LP
