Who’s the real fly?
@beflygelt or @FlyHiii
🤔
I joined summer 2012
but the “y“ is actually just a fancy/olde spelling of the word w “ü“ so u can claim it @FlyHiii
u real
the fly in there is not just random tho, German word literally means “winged“, but used metaphorically as spurred/inspired. 13y/o me was v proud of this lol still dig it tbh
Critical of what?
That one thread which called this way too white was kinda... not off the mark? (tho the pretentious part was..)
I didn't dig that maybe there was just a bit of critical distance, but eventually Cooper Hoffman's character was just kind of celebrated by the film for his douche self-made Merican entrepeneur showman behaviour? Alana tells him he's dumb but then loves him anyway..
Also cause I'm kind of hypersensitive to all kinds of discriminatory representation atm cause that's what I've been reading for uni the past year, found the use of gay stereotypes p jarring especially w it being an emotional plot point w the Safdie character. (which in itself was a nice lil twist). The joke w the racist Japanese restaurant owner doesn't rly work well because it just ends up othering and silencing the Asian characters...
I dunno def cringed many times and kind of went away from this thinking damn, PTA is the oppressor... this just gave me the impression he's despite everything in love w stupid white Merica and the showbiz world, especially the hustle of it all... like he wants to convince u the Merican dream is still alive. U can get the money and the fame and the hoes if u just hustle smart and hard enough (and fake your way through).
There's many great scenes and moments in this where I def went “yup this man knows how to craft some kino“, but a lot of it also wasn't hitting? Even as a slacker 70s thing Inherent Vice did that a million times better imo (and was also funnier). So ya it's like a 7 for me
Lol not surprised one of the first things Alana and Cooper did was watch American Graffiti and PTA considers it one of the major influences, was v obvious tbh.
Gotta say Graffiti >>>>>
film lowkey made me want to watch that again instead, that and Punch-Drunk Love

As @SegaDreamFlash said I think he was trying to convey that he had an awesome time back then but it wasn't awesome for everybody
And I'd say all the way although the way it was shot and edited and scored was pretty fun and uplifting I don't think it was trying to impress upon you that you should be like these people at all. Gary is just an ambitious little h**** hustler 15-year-old idiot trying adapt to rapid onset puberty and apparently having no dad. Alana is a smart but immature little idiot with negative ambition and little sister syndrome and together they make an interesting pair that nobody should be idealizing.

it is v clever he, and just a beautiful word (when u pronounce it in German tho lmao that's kind of its limitation)

That’s literally it, you nailed it. The whole movies just a love letter to a flawed time with protagonists who aren’t perfect, and I appreciate it for that.

yea that's a fair reading, prolly the intended one even. Yet still I guess I kind of expect more awareness of the cultural conversation atm from PTA, a lot of this felt like he's been under a rock for all of 2020 just plotting nostalgic escapism which is borderline tone deaf at points.
I didn't even criticize the "problematic couple" aspect of the film at all because I think it gives the film an interesting and original dynamic. But it is pretty f***ed. Def made it harder for me to "enjoy" the romance aspect of it. From the trailer thought I'm gonna find it pretty sexy w Alana but ended up not seeing it like this at all, maybe you can see that as a good thing, but the film also makes you ship them heavily for sure. So again kind of left wondering what eventually he's rly trying to say w this story
Not implying it can't be art and you have to be able to have an interpretation in words, but like, implied meanings.
However considering he made Boogie Nights and put Belladonna in Inherent Vice we should probably be prepared for Paul to have a h**** old man late phase to put Hitchcock, Wilder etc to shame lol

Are people forgetting about Lolita? How in the world did Kubrick get away with making a movie where the age gap is dramatically wider and the genders are in the traditionally creepier order
I was "shipping" for Gary way more when he was pulling other high school girls. I liked him and Alana as business partners.

Also bro you just said you've been taking a university course to keep up with the "cultural conversations" and this man has said many times he's so busy just making films and having a family that he can barely keep up with new films so I won't hold it against him for not being able to keep up with the rapidly changing PC landscape (if that's even the case which I don't think it is)
PTA is the oppressor
I watched this 3 times in the US and now I’m studying abroad and this is premiering Thursday in 70mm + they’re giving out these pretty souvenir tickets. Let’s goooo
