Can I just say I’m sick of it?
Em and HOV are both GOATs, and these convos always lead to people getting too attached to their fav or who they think is better and lowkey soft-dissing the other person in the conversation.
On twitter I seen people dogging Em’s lyrical content and other people making fun of the fact that Jay has no albums currently on Billboard. Like bruh, when it gets to the point that you’re attacking either of these living legends, you’ve lost the plot.
Both Eminem and Jay Z have had immense impact on the culture and taken it to places it wouldn’t have gone without them.
It’s like that J Cole line.
Anyway, I know this thread is gonna become a thread on who is better, and I accept that, but I at least wanted to express my frustration with putting rappers against each other, and see if anyone else felt the same.

I mean he’s influenced guys like Kendrick but not to the extent that guys like Wayne or hov influenced Kendrick, so even when he has real influence its not much

Hip hop wouldn’t be even close to as mainstream and commercially viable as it is now without him breaking it through to the suburbs.
And part of that is because he’s white. But writing off his talent isn’t fair or accurate. If Jack Harlow was tryna do what Em did in 1999 he would not have blown like that.
Not only that, but Em brought us 50. Not only THAT, but his style has influenced a s*** ton of rappers that came after him, in all different styles, from Tyler to Kendrick.
And finally, even though his larger fan base is infamous for only listening to him and no other rappers, he DID get a lot of people, like me, who were unfamiliar with rap to check it out and fall in love.
    He’s cemented
EDIT: just realized that it might look like I’m calling Harlow talentless in this post from a certain POV. I don’t think that’s true, and he has skill, but he’s nowhere near Em and will not reach GOAT status like Em did without a major boost in his rapping

Is Jay even known in areas like Israel and Switzerland and s***? Those worldwide areas? Not trolling.

50 and Em are known on that scale

Yeah, but I think 50 said that because another lesser known rapper whose name I foolishly didn’t commit to memory said that Jay was more important to the culture than Em, and some people on twitter started having discussions over it.
That’s what I think started the whole discussion

If we're just focused on the US then it's still a debate and on a worldwide scale Eminem (and 50) are more known and brought rap to more households, is that not being more impactful?

yeah as if rap being mainstream did it any good lol. i never said he doesn’t have talent either, i just don’t see his influence. i‘ll give you the fact he introduced white folks into rap though

    That’s fair.
I personally prefer rap being mainstream over more underground because I think it leads to more rap being made, discovered, and appreciated, but I can absolutely see the argument that it has caused more harm than good

it maybe or maybe not did any good for the quality of the art but there are certainly a lot of hip hop artists who have made a living/made more money because of it being mainstream. so it did good for them.

(note: biggie and 2pac and snoop etc were already mainstream so it's not like eminem took it from the underground to the billboard charts but i agree with OP that he made it MORE mainstream)
