Me and my boys are still locked into the new drops on friday and try to at least listen to who’s poppin. I don’t go digging to be the first to be on to someone these days though. I also prefer to listen to shorter projects and will get turned off if it’s a new person or someone i’m eh about that has 15+ songs on the album
i'm still enthusiastic just in a different way, new music i dont really keep up as much but i still seek out music i havent heard before, i had an idm phase a couple months ago, then i was really into pearl jam for some reason, i've been getting into trance lately, and so on
Too much garbage to sift through to find new music
that one gem always worth it!
Yeah, it happened with my ex and it's one of many reasons why we separated. Music brought us together in our teens and early twenties but she stopped being able to keep up with it when she got on the career track. Meanwhile, I loved it as much as, if not more than I did when we met.
This seems like a small thing, but being a musician and songwriter it's a huge thing to not have in common and the degree to which the dynamic changed underscored other changes that were really devastating, leading to a lot of resentment.
On a surface level, I think what tends to happen is that people simply don't have the time to keep up once their routines change in adulthood, so if they don't really love music they don't make the changes necessary to keep it in their new routine.
Secondarily, I think that people see music as a primary mode of expression in their youth, both creatively and socially, which can transfer to other mediums or career paths over time. Music has remained the love of my life since I was very little, so I still prioritize it in my time management.
Music lovers are rare in general
People settle in with what they like and get too comfortable. They might have one or two years where they actively dig for old/new music every day/week but eventually move on from that grind.
I don't want to go that way because there's always dope old joints to catch up on/discover buried in the sea/ocean of mid.... I just want to discover more R&B since I feel like a casual in that genre....
I definitely know people my age or a bit older a lot less into new music and often say they go for more podcasts now
But I do know others who still care more about music, and I can't get into podcasts anyways
The current state of music sucks. A 10 year old mixtape debuting number one just about confirms that.

I kind of like listening to s***ty music. Makes the good stuff sound better and puts into perspective how great good music actually is
I've listened to about 130 new albums this year and only about the top 30 id say are great

The current state of music sucks but that's a bizarre way to solidify the take.
It's a tape never on streaming from one of the most listened to artists of the younger generations, and is considered one of the best tapes of the 2010s. This didn't happen when macadelic, faces, live love, and other tapes went on streaming after many years too lol
Nourished by time is the best new artist out right now and for the foreseeable future
that one gem always worth it!
Always. I'll never stop looking. I look everywhere and for everything. I don't care if a song has 200 views or streams.
its all actually way more simple than you'd imagine I think
people are most easily influenced in childhood but crucially start to question their parents and their authority generally around the teenage years.
the music, games, tv shows, or movies that best sum up that moment in their development and best connects with their experience of the contemporary world are naturally going to be the first new influences drawn into a teenager's life
these will likely carry them through to their 20s because stylistic and cultural shifts happen gradually over time
the moment where it seems to be less rewarding for people to look for new ideas is when the contemporary world no longer resembles the one where they first started absorbing those new influences
they then stick with the music or culture which best represents that era
the next generation then go on with the same cycle
whats interesting is when artists successfully manage to evolve with the times and end up alienating their original fans despite connecting with new ones. In rap this is probably best seen when someone like kanye makes an effort to connect with new performers, producers, and writers across their career
artists who don't evolve in the first 5 - 10 years of their career will likely be undesirable in the following ones as they no longer act as a spokesperson for the youth of the time
in short though: the times change, not you
I am him. It all changed when that one album whose cover has the big tree and the two cacs facing down away from it, to the left and right of it, came out. That album released, and I immediately became enshrouded in dust.
Enjoyable hip hop that has substance and mainstream appeal hasn’t been a thing since the SoundCloud era took over

?
I do seek out new music all the time and am just as tapped in as ever. But my friends gave up awhile ago lol. A lot of them are def a lot more closed minded than they used to be when we were younger

I looked him up, I dig it
Bmore with another savant
I just force myself to listen to new music, its really not that hard. ppl acting like there's some expiration date on listening to new rap are ofc the biggest cornballs of all. maybe its different because i have rapper friends and am a woman and not a sadsack male, idk. being one of these antisocial losers whining about young people just never seemed appealing to me.
